There are an estimated 59 million cats in American homes, compared with 52.9 million dogs. However, cats' often live in multi-cat (more than one cat) households, so 4.2 million more households own dogs than own cats. Dozens of studies have been documented that pets help improve the physical and mental well-being of humans. Pets can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. The stress-lowering effect of stroking a soft, furry friend and the unconditional love of a non-judgemental companion. The self-esteem and good feelings we get from training and caring for a pet are just some of the wonderful benefits we derive from sharing our lives with them. For many humans, pets are an important addition, they become a member of our family and give completeness to our sense of home and hearth. They bring into our lives' joy and laughter, giggles and smiles. They teach us understanding, acceptance and responsibility. For all that they give to us, we lose our hearts to them, and that is called "love".
