My Name is Asher Lev Journal 7

For the first time in Asher's life his drawing was actually supported. I was surprised it was from the Rebbe, of all people. His drawing habit was sopossedly a gift from the other side and the Rebbe was supporting. This could help Asher's father accept him more as a human being. But the opposire was happening. Convinced that this talent is bad, Areyah is awaiting something wrong to happen. He is also thinking that his son does not want to follow the family tradtion. This job has been passed down, and Areyah could almost feel like a failure for not having Asher follow the tradition. Like his purpose for having a son failed, causing him to wish that Asher was not born. "I am ashamed of my own son." (pg 188). Father stated to Asher, right in front of his face. This constant disregard towrads Asher could cause him to rebel against his father in the future. I don't understand how Asher can take all of the resentment from his father. He tries to fight back, but Areyah has been raised in such a marrow minded community that he can't bear to listen to anyone but the Rebbe.

The Hassidic Jew culture traps many of its members allowing them to only read specfic books, have certain professions, and thye never have the oppertunity to see the rest of the world. Asher has a very aquisting mind and he can sense that there is more out there than he is allowed to see. The Rebbe was able to see that Asher needed to expand his knowledge past the average Jewish citizen.
