What is a Manga?
A manga is a japanese comic book.
Differences
Overall, the drawing style is more detailed, and the characters are much prettier. The characters and the plot are more mature, especially Rei. The following are basic differences in each season.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon:
Mamoru is in high school, not in
college like the anime. Zoicite and Kunzite are not gay. On the Moon Kingdom, the Inner senshi falls in love with the generals who were Endymion's guardians. Rei and
Mamoru do not date; they aren't even attracted to each other. Sailor Venus
is thought to be the princess, and she even says that she is, in order to
protect the real one. One of the biggest differences is that originally on
the moon, Serenity commited suicide after Endymion died. In the present when
Mamoru is brainwashed, Sailor Moon kills him, and then she commits suicide. And
the Senshi do not lose their memories.
Sailor Moon R:
There are NO aliens like Ail and Ann. They were
fillers for the anime so that the manga could get far enough ahead of it.
The Four Sisters are not healed; they are killed. Mars, Mercury, and
Jupiter are kidnapped, and only Venus, Moon, Tuxedo Kamen, and ChibiUsa travel
into the future. ChibiUsa is actually 900, and she carries the
future ginzoushi around. Diana shows up here instead of later in SuperS.
ChibiUsa gets her Sailor Senshi form instead of in S. Sailor Pluto
apparently dies after using her forbidden attack.
Sailor Moon S:
Uranus and Neptune are not after the Talismans because they
already have them in their possession. There aren't any heart crystal snatchings
either. Haruka is "supposed" to be male in the manga but there's been pretty strange scenes so I don't know. Michiru doesn't paint.
Neptune and Uranus accepted Sailor Moon as the Princess right off. The enemies
are different, and they all look like the one in the S episode that talks
about Haruka and Michiru's pasts. The Witches 5 have one shot deals, and their
plots are somewhat different. Professor Tomoe is killed, and he doesn't come
back. The ending is much more dramatic, with Saturn doing her Death Ribbon
Revolution. The Senshi get their Super forms in S too, and
the second Holy Grail gives ChibiMoon her power-up. Master Pharoah 90 is
the main bad guy after Mistress 9. Pluto remains until the
very end of S until she, Neptune, and Uranus leave to raise baby Hotaru.
Sailor Moon SuperS:
A big difference is that
the Amazoness Quartet are actually Sailor Senshi. Artemis gets his human form in the manga but doesn't
in the anime. The Outer Senshi come back in volume 14, and from there
on, it's just the version of the first part of the Sailor Stars anime. Hotaru
lives with Haruka, Setsuna, and Michiru (who apparently do have those "rings" but they're
called promise rings and even Setsuna has it. The rings are gone after they get their super forms), and then
she grows up pretty quickly. Her memories are regained, and she gives the Outer
Senshi their powerups. (They all say "Planet Crystal Power, Make-Up",) Here's a little fact that struck me funny which wasn't shown in the anime: Hotaru can play the violin ^_^
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars:
There is no Nephrenia in this season of the manga;
this was finished in SuperS. Haruka and Michiru do go
to Juuban High School with the Inner Senshi. Hotaru is raised by
the Outer Senshi since her father was killed in S. The Three Lights show
up the day Mamoru goes off to Harvard, not knowing tht he was never going to make it.
The Three Lights are "supposed" to be female unlike the anime *and there are pictures of
them with clevage* but there are also scenes with Seiya and Usagi kissing so it just seems to me that Naoko can't make up her mind
about the gender for Haruka and the Three Lights, either that or Naoko is extremely hentai.
The Asteroid Sailor Senshi
are back, and the rest of the Sailor Senshi except for like Sailor Moon and ChibiChibi
are shells of themselves, their Sailor crystals removed. The anime will not go along
this line, if it does it at all, since the Asteroid Senshi do not exist in the
anime. Only ChibiChibi, ChibiMoon, the Asteroid Senshi and Moon were left.
The rest of the Sailor Senshi became evil, and Sailor Moon killed them.
