Gardens, Waterfall, Volcano
and other sites
The Botanical Gardens
The gardens are located near Soufriere.
Pic on the left is Tube Ginger. One large flower, about 5
inches diagonal, grows on a tall stalk.
Some of the stalks were taller than me! The picture was not
enhanced by Adobe,
the flower really looks like that! Ed is enjoying the day!
These are Heliconia, there were at least 3 types that I had never
seen.
These grow very large, like the white bird type in Florida.
This is an inset of the heliconia pic on the right. A hummingbird.
These black and green
hummingbirds are all over the island!
Waterfall
This is a warm waterfall, heated by the remnants of the volcano.
It is located in the
botanical gardens. The discoloration of the rocks is from
sulphur and other minerals from the volcano.
Volcano
There is not much left of the volcano. Just what you see here.
Now it is called the Sulphur Springs
Get ready for the smell! Very warm here, and it reeks!
Not a good thing if the
curving rollercoaster roads have left you queasy!
Below left, notice the road. Yes, this is the world's only 'drive-thru'
volcano!
Right, arrow, is Gabriel's Hole. Gabriel was a guide, back
when visitors were allowed
to walk through the volcano. He was jumping on the ground
to show how unstable
it was, and this hole opened up. Fortunately, he was pulled
out and lived!
The hole above Gabriel's Hole has black bubbling mud.
Volcano from Afar, and the Gros and Petit Pitons
The Pitons are represented on the St. Lucia flag,
and the locally brewed beer is Piton Beer.
I had never seen this before, a Cashew tree. The nuts are in
the fruit. A friend from Haiti tells me
that a delicious preserve is made from the fruit.
There are more pictures in the camera in St. Lucia. I am sure
Ed will get them
developed one day, and email them to me!
We hope you have enjoyed these pics, and that you haven't been too
bored!
Please sign the guestbook, and let us know what you think!
