A  Continuation of the Adventures of
the Dread Pirate Goldrick and His Lady

Saint Lucia, BWI

Saint Lucia Towns
The background is the capital city of Castries.  Relatively new buildings, the city had a massive
fire earlier in the century and the old wooden buildings burned.  Being mostly Roman Catholic,
the church is usually the largest building in all of the towns.  Red roofed buildings on the
left is the open air market, where they sell produce, and pretty much everything else.

Gros Islet, Rodney Bay
No pictures of Gros Islet or Rodney Bay, located north of Castries.  There is a perfectly
good reason for this.  Rodney Bay is where the nightclubs and bars are, and we were
having much too good of a time to be bothered with photography!

Marigot Bay
Quite possibly the most beautiful spot on the island.

Marigot Bay as seen from the lookout point.  Shallow port, very luxurious homes.
Here, one of the locals wove an angel fish from a palm frond for me!

At the bottom of the hill is the customs office and garbage dump (for boats-ok?!)
We bought a bird feeder for Alexis at a bazaar at the bay, made from a coconut.
Near here, we stopped at a little stand where bread is made from cassava root.  They fry it
in a large (3 ft dia.) pan.  For $5EC you can get the plain or with raisins and cherries. GOOD!

Anse La Reye

Anse La Reye is a little fishing village.  The colorful canoes are used for fishing, and are
sometimes taken as far away as Martinique (visible from the north end of the island.)

Notice the large church in the pics on the right.

Canaries

Canaries is mostly a farming town.  The villagers have farms in the mountains to the south.
They walk to and from the farms daily.

This is the laundromat ie: they wash clothes in the river and dry them on the banks.
No, that is not pot in the forground, as someone suggested!  They are firecracker palms

The Brig Unicorn sailing past Canaries.      Notice large church on the right.

Notice the sheets drying on the riverbank.

Soufriere

Soufriere ('Soofray') is located at the base of the Petit Piton.  This is the second
largest city on the island.  The arrow in the pic on the right points to what
is left of the volcano on St. Lucia, now called Sulphur Springs.
We bought hand-made necklaces here.

This is the brigantine Unicorn sailing into Soufriere.  The brig is a tour boat sailing along
the coast of St. Lucia.  We did not take it that day, as it was commandeered by
a convention of Irishmen!

Had to get this pic in Soufriere of the Alexis Pharmacy and Dr. Alexis' office!
Next to this is the St. Lucia Bank of Commerce, which will take my check card,
and makes the conversion correctly!  (Important to know!)

Jalousie
Jalousie is not so much a town as the area between the Petit and Gros Pitons.  There is a
Hilton here.  In order for the islanders to let them build the Hilton,
they had to design it like the villages.  Therefore, the rooms are cottages built
on the hillside.

I really liked the rock formations on the Petit Piton on the left.
The pic on the right is at the base of the Petit Piton.

Important to know if you take this trip by car, the roads could be a ride at
an amusement park!  Twists, turns, steep climbs and dips.  If you are
prone to carsickness, take Dramamine before embarking!
