My Father's Side

Family of Ellis William Glenn
I
am the youngest daughter of Ellis William Glenn
Ellis William Glenn around age 25-30
Ellis
William Glenn
b.
June 11,1905, Watauga Co. N.C. d. Aug. 16, 1981, Newberry, S.C.
He
is buried in Whitmire Cemetery, Whitmire, S.C.
Ellis
attended school as far as the 3rd grade. He left to work for
the
family. He became very successful, owning 2 saw mills and a
construction
company. He is listed in "Who's Who in the South" 1975
and
"Outstanding Americans from The South" 1975
Never
one to be idle, when he retired, he started a Hereford cattle
ranch
at his home in Whitmire, S.C.
Ellis
built many of the fire service roads in Sumter National Forest.
He
was known to be a very honest man who could be trusted
at
his word.
Ellis
is the 2nd son of Rufus Lenoir (b. June 16, 1885 d. July 6, 1947) and
Maggie
Rosa Stansberry Glenn (b. May 26, 1885 d.July 18, 1955).
Rufus
and Rosa were seperated in the early 1920's.
Rufus
is buried in Charleston, W.Va. and Rosa is buried in Eastview
Cemetery,
Newton, N.C.
Rufus
Rosa
The
Stansberrys descended from Count Detmar Sternberg, a
descendant
of William the Orange. He arrived in Maryland in 1658 with his
wife
Catherine and son Tobias. The name was changed through various
court
document spellings to Stansbury and Stansberry.
Stansberry
Family Name
Rosa's
mother, Edwinnia Ward Stansberry, is a descendant of
Benjamine
Ward and is of Cherokee heritage by the maternal line.

married
Sarah Hartley Oct. 20, 1879
She
died about 1930(?)
Henry
was a preacher at Antioch Baptist Church, Cove Creek (Sugar Grove)
My

their
home, and recalls Henry as being "a very nice man."
Henry
and Sarah's children:
Lewis
Glenn
Thomas
Graves Glenn

Though
more research is needed, the Hartley name in N.C. can be
found
originating from Yorkshire,and Lancaster, England
A
Sarah is found in the 1850 Watauga Co. census (link below).
She
is the daughter of Haywood and Sarah Hartley.
We
need to research if our Sarah (too young for this census)
was
descended from these, hence the name.
Sarah's
mother's maiden name was Love.
Dudley
is the first son of Henry H. and Gricean (Grizzy) Adeline Brown
Grizzy
d. between 1850 and 1860.
Henry
H. was born about 1817 in Orange Co. NC.
He
came to Watauga Co. around 1845, with a land grant.
Henry
H. served in the 37th North Carolina Troops, Co. E
He
was captured by Federals and placed in Point Lookout Prison,
exchanged,
and died of cholera in a Confederate hospital in
Richmond,
Va, in 1862..
Both
he and Dudley are listed at the site below:
Roster
of Watauga Co. NC Civil War Soldiers
Henry is also listed here:
37th
North Carolina Troops
More
information on these 2 North Carolina Troops can be found here:
Watuaga
Co. and the War for Southern Independence
This
is very interesting, as it tells which battles the troops
fought
in, as well as a history of enlistment
and
a very good description of the type of men who enlisted.
Henry's
family is found in the 1850 census for Watauga Co.
Dudley
is shown with his first name Guilford
1850
Watauga Co. census
It
is thought that Henry H. is the son of
William
and Susannah Wood Glenn,
though
more research is needed.
I
am still researching my father's side of the family, and will add
more
as it becomes known.
I
would like to thank
Sandy
in NC
for
her recent information on our family!
.
Some
somewhat sketchy research of my own indicates
that
this Glenn family originated from
St.
Nininan's Parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland
Stirlingshire
is near the battle site of William Wallace's
defeat
of the English, and also the
battle
of Bannockburn
It is interesting
to know
that a Sir Robert Glenn
of Scotland married Margaret, daughter of
Robert the Bruce.
