The Shadow was unique in the mystery genera with his ability to become invisible. He didn't actually disappear but clouded the minds of his opponents so they couldn't see him. He learned this and other mental abilities in the mystic orient.
The Shadow was origionally the host of The Detecive Story Hour and became so popular that arthor Maxwell Grant was comishioned to write stories based on the character who became so popular that he gained his own radio show.
The show ran at the same time the pulp stories were being published and on several occasion episodes were based on the printed stories.
