DES daughters are women who's mothers took DES (diethylstilbestrol) while pregnant with them.
DES was supposed to prevent miscarriage and ensure a
healthy pregnancy, but by 1953 is was confirmed to be ineffective at
best.
In 1971 it was linked to a rare form of gynecological cancer called clear cell
adenocarcinoma in the daughters exposed in utero.

It is now known that DES exposure is related to health problems in the
children of the women who took it, and in the women themselves.
If you were exposed to DES, you may need special health care.
DES (diethylstilbestrol)is a synthetic form of estrogen, a female hormone.
It was prescribed between 1938 and 1971 to help women with certain complications of pregnancy.
Use of DES declined in the 1960s after studies showed that it is not effective in preventing
pregnancy complications. When given during the first 5 months of a pregnancy,
DES can interfere with the development of the reproductive system in a fetus.
For this reason, although DES and other estrogens may be prescribed for some medical problems,
they are no longer used during pregnancy.
