I am looking for information on Bakers and Grinsteads in Jennings County, Indiana. If anyone knows anything about a marriage between Mary Grinstead and James Baker sometime in the mid to late 1850's, I'd appreciate the input. James seems to have disappeared and the obituary for Mary mentions 3 small children left...one of them would probably be my grandfather who was brought up as a foster child by a family named Eberwein. Any input would be appreciated.

I thought this entry may help a few of you. I do NOT do any research except to update the newsletters, any info I post is for your research use only.

John Baker was born circa 1640 in Massachusetts. The only clue we have as to his parents is one obscure document that refers to him as being the son of "Andy Baker." We know John came west and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he raised his family.

JOHN RENTY BAKER
John Renty Baker was born in 1735 in either Virginia or North Carolina. (He is the great grandson of the John Baker mentioned above.) His grandfather, Robert, who lived on Piquea Creek in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was a gunsmith who developed the rifle that became known as the "Kentucky" Rifle. He and his sons, who were all gunsmiths, also invented and developed hand operated machines to cut the rifle barrels.

John's father, Andrew, had lived for a time in Prince Edward County, Virginia, before moving to Buncombe County, North Carolina.

John Renty became what was known as a "Long Hunter." This label was given to those men who would go long distances into Indian territory to hunt, staying for months at a time in the wilderness. In 1763 he was living on the Green River among the Cherokees in what is now Kentucky, and it was from this base that he and other Long Hunters made trips down the Cumberland River to Spanish Natchez to sell their furs. Tradition says that he married an Indian woman during this period and had several children by her although he had a wife and family waiting for him back in North Carolina.

When the American Revolution started, John served as a Captain in Colonel Benjamin Cleveland's Regiment. After the war, he brought his family from North Carolina to Kentucky and settled in what would become Clay County.

After the death of his wife, John Renty became a recluse and lived in a rockhouse near the mouth of Buffalo Creek, now in Owsley County, Kentucky, and died there in 1820. John fathered at least 21 children that we know of.

His son Julius Robert (known as Julius Bob) settled on Bullskin Creek in Clay County and became Justice of the first Clay County Court and Sheriff of Clay County. One of Julius Bob's sons was called Boston Bob. There are many mountain stories about Boston Bob. Once he shot off his finger to see what it would feel like. He kept the finger in a bottle of whiskey till one day he became so thirsty, he threw away his finger and drank the whiskey.

The Bakers are the source of many colorful stories but they also were involved in one of the longest, bloodiest family feuds in our country's history. It began in 1843 when Dr. Thomas Baker (a grandson of Julius Bob) shot John Bales.

Dr. Baker and John Bales were both married to daughters of John White and the two young couples became more intimate than is usual in that mountain country. Dr. Baker became insanely jealous of his wife and Bales. Finally in a fit of rage he deserted her and began suit for divorce but suddenly withdrew it. He went to the salt works, where Bates worked in Manchester, called him to the door and shot him with an old-fashioned "pepper box" pistol.

Bates died in great agony, but in his death throes he cursed Baker and authorized the expenditure of $10,000 from his estate toward the capture and conviction of his slayer. This tragedy greatly excited and divided the populace which led into the feud which lasted 59 years, and took over 100 lives in the southeastern Kentucky mountains before it ended.

From the Baker Newsletter Contents Volume #7, Col Henry Baker married Ruth Chancey of Pasquotank County, NC.

"The Baker Family of Hertford County, North Carolina; by Judge B.B. Winborne. Col. Henry Baker & Ruth Chancey; Major John Baker; Simon Baker. Private Manuscript."

I am researching the Chanceys of Pasquotank. If known, I would like to have Col. Bakers birth, marriage and death dates, as well as any known dates for Ruth Chancey. This is one of my brick walls with this family, and every source I find anywhere, has different dates. Col Baker born anywhere from 1684 to 1707.

Any help with this query will be appreciated.

Am seeking info on O.S.(Orrin, Oren)Baker. In 1865 he defended the Andersonville Prison Captain, Henry Wirz. Baker apparently was a lawyer who lived in Washington, D.C. as well as Alexandria, Virginia. He may also at one time resided in St. Louis, Missouri. He has proven to be most elusive. I would appreciate any help or guidance. Jane Singer, 2004 Walnut Avenue, Venice, California 90291
