New Responsibilities

Before the child reaches the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, he or she is only responsible as part of chinuch, or training. After the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the child is legally an adult in the eyes of Judiasm.

"This means:

1. They are now counted for a minyon (prayer quorum of ten).

2. They are responsible for wearing tefillin.

3. They are eligible for aliyot (being called upon to read the Torah).

4. They are responsible to fast on fast days.

5. They are responsible for observing the mitzvot" (Courier Life).
