Subject: MY SPECIAL PERSON

Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2010 19:58:20 -0400

DO YOU HAVE AN EXTRA SPECIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE?

I DO, HE IS MY NEPHEW, RUSS GREEN, ONLY10 YEARS YOUNGER THAN MYSELF.

HE RETIRED AFTER 40 YEARS AS A CONCRETE READY-MIX TRUCK DRIVER AND IS NOW DRIVING AN 18 WHEELER, CONSEQUENTLY, IN HIS SEMI, HE HAS VISITED US HERE IN VIRGINIA, AND KEY WEST. WE HAVE MET-UP WITH HIM IN WISCONSIN, MINNESOTA, FLORIDA AND WASHINGTON STATE.

HE IS A BIG MAN, ABOUT 225 POUNDS AND LOVES TRAVELING THE COUNTRY IN THAT BIG TRUCK. HIS WIFE COMPLAINS THAT HE LOVES THAT TRUCK MORE THAN HER.

HE IS TOTALLY IRREPRESSIBLE AND RATHER REMINDS ME OF A BIG TEDDY BEAR. FOR OVER 40 YEARS, HIS CB HANDLE HAS BEEN "HUGGIE BEAR."

HE IS A SHOW-OFF AND LOVES ATTENTION. HE LAUGHS AT EVERYTHING. HIS LAUGH IS INFECTIOUS AND HIS LAUGH MAKES OTHER PEOPLE LAUGH. WHEN HE WALKS INTO A ROOM, THE WHOLE PLACE LIGHTS UP AND FROM THEREON, THE FLOOR IS HIS, ENTERTAINING YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE.

WHEREVER THAT TRUCK TAKES HIM, HE CALLS HIS "AUNT RENEE." TODAY, WHEN HE CALLED ME, HE WAS IN NEW MEXICO, HEADING HOME TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, TO HIS WIFE, THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE.

WHENEVER HE CALLS AND/OR EMAILS, HE BRIGHTENS ONE'S DAY, HE IS A TOTAL JOY.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH A SPECIAL PERSON? PERHAPS AN OLD FRIEND, A MENTOR OR SOMEBODY WHO IS OFTEN IN YOUR COMPANY OR THOUGHTS? IF YOU DO, PLEASE TELL US ABOUT HIM OR HER AND THOSE THINGS THT MAKE THAT PERSON DEAR TO YOU.

HAZEL GLADYS HALL YAROLIMEK

My Mother, Hazel, wife of Al Yarolimek was a woman of a most genteel nature. Hazel was a very Christian lady who abhorred any cuss words and/or vulgarity. Her one cuss word, used occasionally was, “Damn.” On an even more rare occasion she was heard to say, “Scheisse.” When you heard Hazel use this word, you knew that she was more than slightly perturbed. Yet, Hazel was not one to "explode" with anger, her anger was expressed in a much more gentle manner.

Hazel, being the Christian woman that she was also very non-judgmental. If she held critical, personal opinions of others, she never voiced them. One of the rare criticisms I ever heard her express, was when she saw a dirty child, then she would say, “Being poor, is no excuse for being dirty.” Cleanliness was a big thing with Hazel, and if we kids rebelled at bath time, her lecture was always the same, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.’’ As a child I often wondered if God didn’t love dirty kids.

In my growing years, I only remember receiving one whipping administered on my derriere by Hazel; it was a very hot, typical, summer day in Southern California. My brother, Al, Jr. and my sister, June, and myself, had a wash tub in the backyard, filled with water, by means of the water hose. We were splashing in the water in attempt to be cool and refreshed. We did this with Hazel’s approval, probably to get us out of the house and out of her way. First of all, I must say, our backyard was not grass, it was nothing but pure dirt. When we finished with our play in the tub, we made a big mistake! We left the water hose run, and run, for hours. After leaving the hose run at full force, those many hours, the yard was equivalent to a mud bog. Al, Sr., my Dad, always kept his cars immaculate in appearance and would have to drive his car into that quagmire upon his return from errands. Hazel, knowing Al would be more than a little upset at this, told us 3 kids to go find a switch. Fortunately for us, or so we thought, there were no trees in this barren yard. The only weapon we could find, was a very willowy weed and we mistakenly believed this wouldn’t hurt us. Hazel was effective in changing our minds. She soaked this poor excuse for a switch, in the tub of water, and whipped us, one by one, on the back of our bare legs! Hazel was such a quiet, unassuming person, we always believed we could “outsmart” her, how wrong we were.

One of my fondest memories of my Mother involved a slight bit of subterfuge on her part. Every Saturday afternoon, Hazel baked pies, cookies, and all types of desserts for Sunday dinner and to have on hand in the event family or friends stopped by to visit on Sunday afternoon, after Church. Her pastries were unsurpassed. Every Saturday evening a man and his wife would stop by to visit. This couple was more Al’s friends, than my Mothers and I could tell that she was not too fond of the wife, although she never voiced this. Al was always the ultimate host, always offering food and grog. Al would say, “Hazel, how about fixing coffee to go with some of your pastries?” For many years, Hazel complied with the request, but on this one particular evening, Hazel said, “I didn’t bake today,” and of course Al was dumbfounded at this.

I think Hazel resented these “freeloaders” (not a term she would have used,) and wished to put a stop to the Saturday night visits. It wasn’t just feeding these people, that made her act so unsociable, but……………..I always have felt that Hazel believed Al was having an affair with the woman, and chose a quiet, sneaky way to end the visits………..and end they did, they never again showed up on a Saturday night!

Was Al having an affair with the woman? Hmmmmm, I think I will leave that to the reader to decide.

Subject: Re: Yarolimek Family Reunion/June 24th

I don't know if you know, but my father, Dean Alois Yarolimek, Sr passed this year. It was so traumatic for me I don't remember the date. I think the cause in part was a stroke. Irene Nunnely could tell you since I gave the details to her.

He was a hard drinker when he was young and I understand he was a hell-raiser, too. He was not a lot of fun to be around when he drank. But one day, when I was in high school he quit. He had a customer at his gas station who wanted to quit smoking and Dad told him that if he did, then Dad would quit drinking. And he did. At least until almost thirty years later.

When I was vacationing in Florida many years ago, there was to be a space shuttle launch in a coupe days. A had an idea. I called up mom and dad and told them I had made them plane reservations so they could come to Florida to see the liftoff. The agreed. Things went smoothly. I never saw my Dad more excited than to see the shuttle fire up and take off. The sound was incredible. It almost knocked you over, several seconds after we saw the shuttle lift off.

Afterward, we went to lunch to celebrate. I ordered a cocktail of some sort. Then Dad ordered a beer. I was shocked and panic stricken. Was Dad drinking again? I was sick with fear and worry. Some weeks later, I asked Mom how dad was. She wasn't sure what I was talking about, so I asked her if Dad was still drinking.

She laughed and said, "No." "Then why did he have a beer down in Florida?" She said it was because he was so thrilled at how things worked out that he wanted to celebrate the occasion. He had been thrilled and so happy, she said.

To my knowledge, Dad never had another drink. And if he did, I never knew about it.

The other thing about Dad was that if you screwed him, he never forgot nor forgave. Conversely, he was the type of man who would literally give you the shirt off his back. Over the years I heard from his customers that when times were hard, he would give them gasoline, no charge. And the countless loans he made to them, many of which I'm pretty sure were never repaid. He was generous to a fault.

I don't know if you know this, but it is my understanding that all the Deans in the Yarolimek can be traced back to my dad. I believe he was the first. As for Al/Alois, that goes back to my Grandfather Alois (Al) Yarolimek.

I wanted to share this thoughts with you to, in some small way, to honor my father.

Sincerely,

Dean Alois Yarolimek, Jr ******************************************************************
