Dad would make a fresh batch of Tom and Jerry mix first thing in the morning. It was fun watching him mix it up, using a dozen eggs per batch. The Regulars would start to come in the back door pretty early, because just like Sundays, the tavern wasn't supposed to be open until noon. They'd come early for either coffee or the Tom and Jerry's. Dad only made them on Christmas Eve morning and New Years Eve morning. Christmas Eve day was always festive, with lots of Christmas decorations around the tavern and onto the dance floor. Christmas music played from the jute box all day long and Well Wishers came and went each having at least one Tom and Jerry, because the first one was always free. The tavern stayed open until the last person went home, and we had to wait until Dad came into the house to open our presents. Mom would always make me go to the tavern door and say, "Dad, can you come in soon so we can open presents?" Hopefully, that would give the customer a "hint" that it was time to go home. Once we ate supper, then it was time! Mom had the presents wrapped and pretty under the tree that sat in the corner of the living room in front of the big window. We would all open our presents, always new pajamas, maybe slippers, new socks and something fun, maybe a toy. Most of our toys came from Santa, but Mom wanted us to have something fun too. Then it was time to go look at all of the Christmas lights around town and maybe even go to Dakota or LaCrescent. I always looked forward to seeing all of the decorations but EVERY year, Santa would come while we were gone!!! You'd have thought after a year of two that we'd just stay home, but oh no, off we went year after year and year after year we'd miss him! But he'd always eat the cookies we'd left out for him. Our toys were all under the tree when we got back! My memories may be different from yours, but the ones we share would be the smells of the kitchen, the sound of her laughter, and the smile on her face. Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I know I was on the tail end of many of your Thanksgivings but I have very vivid memories of our holidays. Most of my childhood Thanksgivings were surrounds by fun relatives and great food. Mom would have the turkey in the oven by the time I got up and she was so proud of it every time she opened the oven to take a peek! I doubt we ever baked one that wasn't at LEAST 20#. She prepared all of the food, I don't know if I was never interested in helping or was never asked but Mom did it all. Relatives would come with side dishes but Mom's was always the best dressing, A.Emma used to put something strange in hers. On very special occasions Dean might call. That was like talking to a movie star because he was always so far away and everyone was so proud of him. Jan might come with her babies and that was always fun. I bet she was in the kitchen while I was playing with the babies! We'd call Ron or he'd call us from A.Marion's. He always go to have holidays with them. Fred would be in the tavern with Dad. We would have cleaned in the morning and he would stock the coolers while I dusted and got ready for the party. We'd sometimes put tables on the dance floor when we had a big group, otherwise we'd set a table in the livingroom and one in the kitchen and put the food in the diningroom. Remember the diningroom? I don't think we EVER ate in there. It was more of a pass through than an actural diningroom. Once in a while, if it was a large group, we'd even get a gin rummy game going, the kind we did at our reunion in Altura. That was the best. Anyway, no matter who you were with, or how much food you prepared, I hope your Thanksgiving made great memories for your families as you all did for me. Love you all, Roxy ******************************************************************** From: "Bob Voigt" To: DYAROLIM@mail.win.org Subject: Re: Fadded memory from Bob Voigt Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 14:16:35 -0500 Here's the story as told to me by Fred one day at his bar in Dresbach: Fred said his outfit captured a couple German soldiers. The chief in charge told Fred to march the prisoners back to headquarters behind the lines. So Fred takes off down the road headed back behind the lines. As he walked further down the road, mile after mile, he began to realize he was getting farther and farther away from his outfit. He literally was in fear of being cut away from his command because of the distance he was getting from them, so as he was marching the POW's down the road, he ran into an Engineering outfit that was repairing a big bomb crater in the middle of the road. He marched up to these guys and asked them if they would take the POW's off his hands and deliver them to headquarters for interrogation. Which was still some distance farther down the road away from his own outfit. The Engineers advised Fred to march those damn Nazi's right down into the bottom of the crater, and sure, they'd be glad to take them off his hands! Of course Fred couldn't do that, so he kept on with his journey delivering the POW's to the rear. I don't remember any more what happened after that, I'm sure Fred got back with his outfit a little later. Raymond and Franklin said they had a great time. It's hard to believe it has been a 100 years since they came to this country. I did not know until you told me they did not become citizens until 1909. Mom never told me about that. I haven't been to the family reunion in years. I remember in the early years it was quite a annual event. Uncle Fred, Ed, George, Earl, Frank and the others always played cards. I think they brought about 20 cases of beer to the picnic. It was quite a time. Of course I was way under the drinking age but uncle George would always let me have a few beers. Of course my mother didn't think too much of that idea. I have a lot of pictures my mother left me. Maybe sometime we could get together and go over the pictures. I am glad to hear that a lot of young people were at the picnic. I will always remember the food at the picnics. There was always a lot. No one ever went away hungry. One of the trademarks of the Yarolimek family is that there was always plenty of food available. Sunday dinners were always a big event. My dad would make homemade wine and have my uncles in the basement drinking before dinner. Of course my mother thought dad was getting the guys drunk. Hey, they were just having a good time. My mother could never understand how uncle George could drink all weekend and be ready to go to work on Monday morning. Uncle George was something else. I still remember when I turned 21. I had a party at your dad's tavern. Roxy helped. That was way back in 1966. I don't know if your travels ever bring you here to Northwest Florida. We live outside Pensacola in Gulf Breeze. Have been here in the area since 1967. Haven't been back to Minnesota since 1999. Don't know if Franklin told you or not but he is moving from Illinois to here in Florida. Only about 20 miles from our house. That will be nice. I can't get Raymond to move here. His roots are in Plainview. If you get a chance sometime give me a call at *** *** ****. You are doing an outstanding job on keeping the family tree up-to-date.
