Welcome to Differing!

Hosted by Dana Mulvany, MSW, LCSW

Why the word "differing?"

I chose this word because it includes people from differing backgrounds as well as those with differing abilities. Differences in other people, which often lead to conflict, can also lead to growth. People have a natural, even healthy, tendency to resist what is not understood, which can be frustrating for those of us who differ from the norm. Yet the differences in experiences and thinking can lead to valuable perspectives that can be useful to others. Just as necessity is the mother of invention, so can minority perspectives motivate discoveries and insights valuable to society.

In my work, I honor and value differences. One of my favorite books is "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," by Oliver Saks, M.D. What many people saw as pathological, Dr. Saks shared with us as conditions that illuminate the wonders of the human condition. I thank him for sharing his perspective with us.
