IRISH CEILI & SET DANCING IN NEW JERSEY

OVERVIEW

Set dancing difers from ceili in that it is danced more flat footed rather than on the toes. In ceili dancing the body is danced followed by the first figure then the body folowed by the second figu[re the body again followed by the third figure without a break whereas in setdancing there is usually a break between each figure. They are both danced by the young, middle aged and seniors. They are done in groups with usually four couples all facing into the center at the start of the dance. Some have anywhere from three to six figures with each couple or pair of couples taking a turn at the figure. There is very little standard in set dancing from the hold the couples use to the order in which each couple dances. Each set dance usually comes from an area in Ireland where it originated and has its own individual type of footwork, style and movements. If it is to be danced properly
