and Wole Soyinka to name but a few, this anthology celebrates the writers’
association PEN’s 75th anniversary. Poems, letters, diaries, notes and
memoirs, some never before published, form a journey through prison experience.
After the cell door closes, themes such as cleaning, food, dreams, cellmates,
time, meditation and finally freedom are explored. The prison world, with
all its terrors, is compared to the world outside, and imprisoned writers
search for an understanding of both. SIOBHAN DOWD has worked on PEN’s human
rights campaigns for ten years and is an author of essays, book reviews
and travel pieces.
