Having loved the original version of Daytona Usa, I
was delighted when a new version of the game came
out with two new tracks. So I traded my old Daytona
in to a second hand game shop and came home with the
new improved version. Every review I had read said
Championship Circuit Edition is better than it's
predecessor. Here is my review to help you decide.
Graphics: 93%
Being English I had a copy of the european version
of Daytona that had large borders along the edge of
the screen so I was delighted to see that the borders
had been removed and replaced it with smooth arcade-like
graphics. Everything looks smoother and polished than
the old version so it is hard not to be impressed. The
colours are not as bright as the old version but the
whole look of Championship Circuit Edition looks as
near arcade perfect as anyone could hope for.
Sound: 79%
The sound on this game is not it's strong point, because
the old catchy tunes from the arcade have been replaced
with remixed instrumental versions and a few rock songs
have been added. The car sounds are as good as ever
with stereo effects added for realism. The announcememts
from your co-driver are annoying after a while, with him
saying 'try to go easy on the car' and 'your burning the
tires' over and over, but the sound on this game can't
be described as bad.
Game Play: 95%
The game play is what makes this game so good. The speed
of the race and the thrill of the chase will keep any
racing fans at it for hours. Championship Circuit Edition
has a two player option that allows you and a friend the
opportunity to race each other just like in the arcade.
I personally prefer racing on my own because you get to
see all the graphics in their full glory, but it is still
a nice addition. This new version of Daytona has more
options than the original including a ghost time lap where
you race against the ghost of your best time.
Lastability: 95%
Championship Circuit Edition will last you for as long as
you have a Saturn because it is the type of game you will
come back to time and time again. Anyone who likes arcade
racing games won't get sick of this game because of the 5
courses and many options.
Overall: 90%
Daytona CCE may not look as good as Sega Rally but it plays
better and is more fun than any other arcade racer currently
available on any console. I do wish CCE had taken the original
arcade presentation with the music and the option screen, but
you can find the original Daytona car by entering the cheat
which more than makes up for that. If you currently own a Saturn
and do not have CCE then you are most certainly missing out
