When I learned that Resident Evil was coming to the Saturn, I became
very excited as it was one of the few games that made me jealous of
Playstation owners. When I learned that it would be the un-cut version
released I became even more excited. Resident Evil is now available
throughout Europe and although is not the un-cut version as promised it is an amazing adventure game. The game is set in a vast mansion filled with zombies and creatures of the undead you must solve clues and blast the zombies in order to find your way through the mansion. As you read on my review will shed some light over this unique gaming experience.
Graphics: 9/10
Everything from the Playstation version has made its way to the Saturn. The detailed backgrounds are rich in colour and texture to make the game look and feel as realistic as possible. The backgrounds are sharper in appearance than the Playstation version which makes Saturn Resident Evil look slightly better. The characters move smoothly and look every bit as good as the Playstation version, however Saturn Resident Evil does not use as much gorad shading on the characters as the Playstation version which means they look slightly rougher. In places the graphics look breath taking as you move your way around the outside of the mansion. The zombies in the game look truly scary and add to the whole feel of the adventure.
Game Play: 9/10
Resident Evil is unique in terms of game play. The Alone in the dark
series maybe slightly similar but overall Resident Evil is a unique game play experience. It blends together adventure, horror and an element of puzzle solving. Playing Resident Evil can be completely engrossing at times, but there are moments when you can be stuck on certain parts of the level and this can be frustrating but this does not detract from the game play. The only flaw I found in the game play is the fighting with the zombies can be difficult at times as aiming the weapons can be tricky depending on the different camera angles.
Sounds: 10/10
The sound is faultless, the music and sound effects could not be better. The music in the game is just like a movie soundtrack really spooky horror music that fits into the mood of the game perfectly. The grunts and noises from the zombies and nastiness are excellent. The sound in this game is very important as it creates the whole atmosphere in the game, the music works perfectly. The voices of the characters play an important part in the story, all right they may be cheesy but are very effective.
Lastability 9/10
The unique part of Saturn Resident Evil is the battle mode you receive
when completing the game. This is a function of the game that simply
allows you walk around the mansion blasting at the zombies with plenty
of amunition to stock up your gun.
Overall 9.5/10
Overall an excellent title that every Saturn owner should have in their collection. In places the game can genuinly be scary so not for the faint of heart. All I can say to finish this review is I can’t wait for Resident Evil 2
