The era of Germanys most successfull and well know Groups of All Times

Sie tüfteln an Dieters Urlaubs-Idee "You're My Heart, Your're My Soul" und beschließen das Duo "Modern Talking" zu nennen.

Januar 1985 wird "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" zum ersten mal in den deutschen Charts notiert.

Schon im Mä:rz 1985 erscheint die zweite Single von Modern Talking, "You Can Win If You Want". Von "You're My Heart..." bis "Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. for Love)". Das erste Modern Talking Album erschien nahezu gleichzeitig mit "You Can Win If You Want". Beim Titel "There's Too Much Blue In Missing You" vom ersten Album singt Dieter Bohlen sogar den Leadgesang.

Modern Talking was formed in Germany in 1984. It consisted of two members: Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders. Their first single You're My Heart, You're My Soul was released late in 1984 and by early 1985 it was a huge hit in Germany as well as in most non-English speaking European and Asian countries. The hits kept following one another for the next couple of years. Among the more noted ones were: Cheri Cheri Lady, Brother Louie, Geronimo's Cadillac plus number of others. What made this group popular (they sold millions of copies of their albums!) was the fact that Dieter knew what people wanted, namely, emotional, easy to listen dance songs. His music combined with an angelic voice of Thomas produced a fail-free recipe. Unfortunately, Modern Talking lasted barely three years. After misunderstandings between Dieter, Thomas and his wife Nora, the group split up in 1987 after their musical contract had expired. Dieter concentrated on his new project Blue System and Thomas went solo. To really appreciate their music, one would have had to live in Europe in that period. Even though some might say that their music is naive and simple and, may be, lacks substance, it is still one of the great things that happened in the Disco era. Eastern European and Asian countries still adore their music, people still buy their CDs, Dieter and Thomas still hold concerts in Moscow (not together though). In other words, Modern Talking is very much alive and, I think, will be for a long time yet.

Dieter Bohlen Interview in München Germany

Q : Who's behind the idea of this Modern Talking reunion ?

A : To be honest, Thomas and me are seeing each other for 4 years, but we didn't tell to anyone. We've become friends again. Four months ago, we've decided to bring Modern Talking back to market. Here in Germany we have this great TV-show called "Wetten, dass...". I think everybody in Germany watches this show, also in Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. The hosts of the show asked me if we would allow them to present Modern Talking in the show. I thought for a few minutes, then I called Thomas and we decided to come back with Modern Talking. We produced a new album, it will be available on the market in about 3 weeks in Germany. The new single is already on the market - it is sold pretty good in Germany, we expect to a chart entry of it. The LP will consist of 14 '98 versions of our old songs - "You're My Heart, You're My Soul", "You can Win If You Want", "Brother Louie", "Atlantis Is Calling"... We have also recorded new songs, so the album will include 18 tracks and I think there will be a song for everyone's heart. I hope people will enjoy the album. Thomas and me gave a lot of interviews this week. Next week, those interviews will be in a lot of German journals.

Q : Can we hope to another Modern Talking album following "Back For Good" ?

A : (Laughing) Another one ?

Q : Will there be an 8th Album of Modern Talking ?

A : We'll see, but I'm sure this one will be a great success. In May, we'll be touring all over Germany. We'll sing in 30 cities and we'd like a world tour in Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Japan.

Q : Maybe Latvia ?

A : Yes, why not ? if you're asking for us, it won't be a problem. We'll decide it after the tour - but I'm almost sure next year we'll have a new album with 14 or 16 completely new songs. "Back for Good" includes a song I've written for the World Football Championship. Its title is...oh, I'm getting old !!! I can't remember it right now, but we hope it's a good song !!!

Q : What will Blue System become in the future ?

A : It's difficult to answer. Probably the 14th album will be released this October. This depends on the time I'll have to write the songs. If Modern Talking will go fine, I think to make a one-year break - although I'm not completely sure. Maybe I can write the songs for both Modern Talking and Blue System albums, but I have to write another one for Touche, one here, one there, Lord !

Q : Speaking of Touche, will there be another single from the "Part I" album ?

A : I don't know. Three singles have already been released in Germany : "I Can Get No Sleep", "I Want You Back, I Want Your Heart" and "I'll Give You My Heart". There will be no more singles out of this album - we'll write new songs. I don't know when I'll find the time to do this - I'm not very clear right now. I don't know what I want to do because I wasn't expecting to come back with Modern Talking this year. I am working for the television, too. At the beginning of 1998, I didn't know we'll get Modern Talking back so I can't tell you now what we're going to do in the future. It all depends on Thomas and me.

Q : Another dream of yours is singing a duet with certain pop-rock singers. Please tell me more about it.

A : Thomas and me thought about a duet with the Pet Shop Boys. We've known them for 10 years and we are very good friends. I think we can make a song together - or I'll write the song and Neil Tennant and Thomas sing it - or something like this. I'd be very fond of making this song. There's a problem - the Pet Shop Boys record company is the BMI, ours is the BMG. I've called the BMG Germany Manager and he told me : "OK. If you really enjoy doing this, it's not a problem for us ". I think the BMI and the BMG should find the way to work this out - and the result could be a brilliant song.

Q : Modern Talking was very popular during the '80's. Why did you decide to break up ? What was the reason ?

A : To be honest, Nora, Thomas's wife. She was completely mad !!!

Q : Like Yoko Ono ?

A : (Everyone laughs) More !!!

Q : How it feels working with a mad woman ?

A : I think there had always been some friendship between Thomas and me. We were really close friends until his wife started to tell him what to do. She didn't allow him make photographs with me for the TV-shows, go in England or see his female-fans. She said : "Thomas mustn't do this like this". Although her ideas weren't completely bad, after three years I realised I'd die if I would continue working in those conditions. So I said : "OK, we will follow our separate ways". Now, Thomas and Nora are divorced and she lives in L.A. I think that's good. We became friends again.

Q : Where does Thomas live right now ?

A : He lives in Koblenz, about 400 miles from Hamburg. We were together the whole last week, working for our new video, you'll see it in 2 or 3 weeks. The video is fantastic, don't miss it !!!

Modern Talking is back !!!
