Whitaker Henry Butler Sr.
Whitaker (aka. Whit one) was born 22 March 1801 in GA. In 1820 he was in Jasper Co. GA. where he drew land in the land lottery. In 1826 he witnessed land sales in Hall Co. and is listed in the 1830 census in the county. In 1839 he joined the Tallapoosa Primitive Baptist Church in Carrol Co, GA. by 1840 he and his family had settled in Newell, Randolph Co, AL. He and his wife, Miriam (Myra) Walker, were both of Irish descent. Whitaker was orphaned and was raised by a Brooks family. He was blue eyed and his hair turned gray at an early age. He weighed around 170 lbs. and was 5' 10" tall. He was an expert marksman killing an owl at 40 yds. in the moonlight. He also killed 7 squirrels standing by a tree. At the age of 95 he and his wife rode horseback to Henry Co. GA. to visit family. Whitaker and Miriam's children were: William 1820; James 1828 m. Susana Lavvorn b.1836; John b. 1830 was killed in the civil war; Sally Jane b.1831 m. ? Reagan; Daniel b. 1832 served in the civil war and m. Jane Reagan;Whitaker Henry Jr. b. 1834* m. Martha Matilda Camp; Clark b. 1836 served in the Civil war from Jan.1863 to April 1865and m. Elizabeth Lavvorn; Pickens b. 1838 also served in the civil war and m. Lida Louise Camp; Anderson b. 1840; and Thomas Jefferson b. 1842 m. Sarah F. Gay. of his children William moved to Winston Co. AL and raised a family. James moved to Albertville, AL where he raised a large family. Pickens raised his family inArab,AL.the rest of the children stayed in the Randolph Co. area. Whitaker died in Dec 1899 and is buried with his wife in Lovvorn Hill Cemetery, now called Mt. Carmel, near Newell, AL.

Whitaker Henry Butler Jr., the 5th son of Whitaker Henry Butler Sr. and Miriam Walker was born 22 March 1835* in GA. He was living in the Newell area with his parents in 1840. Whit Jr. married Martha Matilda Camp on 12 Oct 1856in Carrol Co. GA. Martha was born 20 Feb 1836 in Newton Co. GA. Martha was the daughter of Louis Camp and Leah Daniel. Whit Jr. was a farmer in the Newell area of Randolph Co. and was known as "black Whit" possibly because of his black hair. his home was on the Cohobodia creek in Newell. He was 5' 6" tall and weighed 160 lbs. He was stout and at 60 years of ago he still hauled logs. He was the best hand to drive a team. Whit Jr. and Martha had 11 children: Daniel (1857-1943) m.Mary Rigsby; Pickens (Mar 1859-27 May 1931); Mary (1862); Anderson (20 Aug 1863- 11 Nov 1947); Leah Frances (1867); Lewis (1868); William Alfred (26 Apr 1873-29 June 1959) m. Laura Elizabeth Copeland; Henry Newton (12 May 1875-16 Feb 1936) Martha (22Apr 1877-22Apr 1907) and Nancy Zane (18 Nov 1879-1 Feb 1937) Martha died 3 Jan 1911. Whit Jr. died 8 Aug 1904 and is buried with his wife at Harmony Congregation Methodist Church in Newell.
