Amiga Diary for 1997

1997 is over, and what a year it was! It began with the Amiga situation getting worse and worse. Escom had gone bust, Viscorp had no money to buy the Amiga after all, and even if they or Quikpak did buy the Amiga, these were companies nobody had heard of, and only had interests in using the Amiga for niche markets.

Along come Gateway 2000, and surprise everyone. Almost a year later, I am still hesitant to say whether they will do good things for the Amiga, but I feel far more confident about them than I did Escom, this time two years ago.

So let's have a look at the highlights for the Amiga of 1997...

January Amiga Fest held. StormC 2.0, Art Effect 1.5 and Drawstudio 1.1 released.
February Quikpak announces final bid for the Amiga. Personal Paint 7 released.
March Gateway 2000 buy the Amiga! Gateway Amiga show held. Siamese 2 released. Details of PowerUP boards released. Myst conversion announced by ClickBOOM. Almathera go bust. DoubleClick 3 released.
April AmiTech '97 held. AHI 4 released.
May World of Amiga show held. ClickBOOM's conversion wish list announced. ClickBOOM declare PowerPC support. PowerPC support added for Personal Paint.
June Micronik Infinitiv Amiga clones released under license. Siamese Alpha released.
July Amiga Gathering '97 held. Index Information and Intrinsic Computer Systems receive Amiga licenses. Wonder TV A6000 announced. DoubleClick 4 released.
August Festival Amiga '97 held. pOS 'pre-release' and Aladdin 4D 5.0 released.
September Amiga RC5 effort initiated. The World Foundry software house is formed. Picture Manager Pro 4.0 released.
October Amiga RC5 effort enters Top Ten. DCE receive Amiga licence. NewIcons 4.0 released.
November Computer '97 and Midwest Amiga Exposition were held. Access Amiga clone released from Index Information. Amiga Forever, Shadow of the 3rd Moon and Uropa 2 are released. Price cuts on the Nova A4000T-PPC clones. DoubleClick 5 released.
December Amiga International announces an order of 2,000 A1200s from India. Amiga International offers sponsorship to Mystique, who specialise in programs aimed at Children. The Final Odyssey is released.
