An Internet Love Story

It is often said that true love and happiness will alight upon you if you quit pursuing it, and just shut up, sit down, and wait for it to alight upon you.

You know, whoever said that, sure knew what they were talking about ... read on ... and enjoy.

Hello. My name is Bobby. I am a 31 year old male person who currently lives in the great and wonderful area of East Tennessee, not far from Knoxville. I have pretty much lived here all my life, and I have several varied interests, including of course chatting on the internet ... I have been an IRC addict since I accidentally discovered it WAY back in 1993, before the internet even became a fixture in our everyday lives. You could say it's kinda shaped the way I relate to people, as I have met many interesting people through this medium that I otherwise would not have met.

Eventually, before too long, I found out how easy it is to develop attachments to people online. For some reason, it is very easy to open up emotionally to people online, and it is possible to develop close friendships, even romantic relationships in this way. I've made many friends online, some of whom have been very close friends.

But, I've also had a bit of heartbreak too. Being a very trusting person makes it easy to be taken advantage of (which I guess is in my nature) and I've always had problems with sticking up for myself. I suppose which is why I've never considered myself very good at the relationship thing. After my last attempt ended in disaster, I swore off internet relationships .. never again. Or so I thought ....

After my last breakup, I found myself hanging around the #bbw channel on undernet. (Big Beautiful Women, for those not in the know) ... my ex-girlfriend was a plus-size and when we parted ways, I did seek out companionship on there, for awhile. I had made lots of friends too.

Well, one night, 29 May 1999 to be exact, I had joined the #bbw channel, and it was my first time in there in a long time. I was sitting there, minding my own business ... and I saw someone nicknamed Fair_Lady join the channel. This is her, folks ...

... I happened to scan her info and found out that she was from New Zealand. As it happens, I've always had an interest in wanting to meet and talk to people from New Zealand, so I decided to private msg her and say hello. She replied back, and we seemed to click right off from the beginning! The conversation flowed easily, and we found out that we had a lot in common. Something just seemed to click. She really seemed to enjoy my company and I could tell, and we talked for five hours or more that night ... I found out that her name is Beverly, and that she had not been online very long ... maybe about a few weeks.

It got late, and I had to get to bed ... I really wanted to chat to her on the phone, although I had no long distance access on my phone. Nevertheless, I did ask her for her number. Being the cautious sort, she was reluctant to give out such information, and rightly so ... but as they had $10 weekends in NZ for calls to the USA, she offered to ring me up that same night. I was thrilled ... so I gave her my phone number.

We chatted for hours that night, and it was wonderful. It became only the first of many phone chats that we have had, and I could sense a connection being formed. She had a wonderful voice, and I could tell she was a warm and caring person. I think she liked my Tennessee drawl a bit too. :) It was very hard to hang up the phone after that night, but we have always kept in touch ever since.

I found myself getting attached to this woman very much. I sent her a bouquet of flowers in the mail, radioed right across the pacific ocean from my local flower shop. And one night, on our 3 month anniversary of us talking online, I rang up her favorite radio station ... got put on the air ... dedicated her favorite song (From This Moment On by Shania Twain) and told her, for the first time, that I loved her. *smile* And all of the Waikato area in New Zealand got to hear it too!

We're now 7 months strong into our relationship. The distance gets hard on us alot, but I know she is something really special, and we are saving back until the day we can finally meet in person! I have already let her speak on the phone with my mom and uncle and others in my family (as she has done me with her family) and it feels that we are closer than ever. We've even rung the millenium in together, at 6 am Tennessee time on 31 Dec 1999, while on the phone and watching the fireworks display in Auckland. This feels right. I cannot wait to meet this woman. :)
