MY FAMILY HISTORY
(according to the unwritten record)

I had often heard the story of our family history, and, although it was never prefaced with Once Upon a Time, I had always believed it to be a fairy tale of sorts.Us? Descended from German horse thieves? Supposedly fled their country to save their necks....and then only to carry on from the shadow of Hadrians Wall....raiding and pillaging Northern England....kicked out of Scotland by the other clans....settling in England, Ireland and Wales....unable to grow potatoes in Ireland and coming to Canada....Anyway, that is how the story goes....
I had always been interested in my family history, but never did anything about it until after I had spent a rainy Sunday afternoon talking with my Grandmother. As I was raised in the military lifestyle, we never really developed roots, moving about the country, and the world and I suppose this sparked my interest. I often wondered what it would have been like to have grown up in the same community, the same house and to develop lifelong relationships, especially with cousins and other relatives. But I enjoyed the travel, the new communities and the new, however short they may have been, friendships.
The WAUGH name first appears in Canadian records with a Francis Waugh born in Eniskillan, Ireland in 1816, marrying Anne Kirk in 1838 and immigrating to Canada in 1847 or 48, settling in the Wellington County. Ontario area. If this is a relative, I am missing at least two generations until I find a Thomas Russell Waugh of Owen sound. I am able to link directly with Thomas.
There is also aFrancis Waugh, from Ireland, listed as an immigrant in the late 1600s, who apparently travelled to the prairie provinces and was never heard from again.
The Garfat family name is traced from the present to the 1700s on the following pages. Most of my personal history was obtained that rainy day, with the empty places filled from library, archives, and other family sources. There is a little mystery, as my Grandmother relates (and open to future discussion) that William James Garfat was raised by an uncle, who also had three sons....William, Frank and Joseph. I have researched these names and found a Joseph of Durham County, but little else.
I have branched off on some of the names on the paternal side of my personal history with a little success. On the maternal side....not as lucky, as I was only able to go back to my grandparents and I think that is as far as I will be able to go....
If you able to fill in any of the gaps on the following pages, please feel free to contact me. I appreciate any information that you may possess, and who knows....I may have helped you. Take what you need and enjoy....good hunting.

Thank you
