"Mommy, when can I go home?" I asked. We had been sitting in the room the whole day, and no doctors had came in to explain everything, and my leg was throbbing from being held up in that sling thing. "I'm not sure honey, they might do some tests or something, that car was going pretty fast and knocked you out." Mom said putting her Women's Day magazine on her lap. "Oh, did they get the guy or hit me?" I asked. i didn't really care, but I wanted to make some conversation. "Um, not really, but it was your favorite car, a Ford Mustand V8, and it was your color." Mom said knocking me a little. "I wish I could have seen it." I said laughing. "Yeah, well I didn't see it either, Tay did and tried to see the liscense plate, he was really scared." Mom said. I knew Taylor was back, he had to be. "He was scared?" I asked hopefully. "Of course he was." Mom said taken aback from my question. She hadn't noticed that they had all changed, that they left. "You have a visiter Ms. Hanson." a curly headed blonde nurse said sticking her head in to the room. "Cool, send them in." I said. I don't think dad would bring them back again. "Hey Julianna." Lara said walking into the door quietly. "Hey Lara, thanks for coming, how did you know i was here?" I asked happily. Dumb question, oh well. "Well, Zac asked me to come when I went over to your house with my sister. Zac and I go way back." She said laughing. "You do? Really?" I asked. "Oh yeah, well kinda, he used to come to the park before things started getting good for them, and we used to hang out." She said. How could that be though? Zac and I used to do everything together. "That must have been the summer you stayed at Aunt Mary's house all the time because she needed help watching little Ryan." Mom said. Oh yeah that must be it. My little cousin was just born back then, and I was the summer babysitter."So what exactly happened? Zac didn't explain." Lara said sitting on a nearby stool. "I got hit by a car, a mustang too." I said chuckling. Oh cool man, I want one of those cars so badly." Lara said turning in the swing stool. "I know, I wish I had been able to see it better." I said. "It was so nice of you to come Lara, Julie has been getting a little restless." Mom said. This time she looked at Lara with a sincere look, like the friends I used to have. I knew she would never look at Jennifer like that, but Lara and Jenn were like black and white. "No problem, I didn't really feel like staying at the house without her." Lara said answering my mom's question. "Who dropped you off?" I asked. "Oh Jennifer did, she's the one who takes care of me mostly, mom is mostly on business trips, and dad left when I was seven." Lara said like it was no big deal. I was lucky to have such a good family. Well at least sometimes I was lucky. "Oh good, I'll take you back to our house when I leave." Mom said turning back to her magazine. "What? You're leaving? Don't leave, I don't like hospitals." I said looking around. I didn't care how many cute puppy posters were on the wall, I still didn't like it. "I can't stay Julie, I have to take care of the younger ones, I'll be back bright and early." Mom said. "Mrs. Hanson, would it be all right if I stayed the night with her? My mom isn't home, and all I'd have to do was let Jennifer know." Lara offered standing up. Wow, she was real cool to do this, I'd have to return the favor. I hope mom will let her though. "Are you sure Lara? I mean, we could always say that you are a relative if you really want to." Mom said gathering her coat. "It's really fine, all I have to do is call Jennifer at your house, I'll be right back." Lara said slipping out of the door with a quarter. "That's some friend you got there kiddo." Mom said kissing my cheek. "Yeah, you're telling me." I said. "Well, I'll see you right in the mornig, honest, and then we'll probably be taking you home." Mom said grabbing her pocketbook. "OK, love you mom." I said as she walked into the hall. Scary hospital room.
Part 6
"Jennifer said it'll be allright, and that I should just call her tomorrow." Lara said opening the heavy door. "Man, this door is hard." She said letting it swing behind her. "Hospitals are scary don't you think?" I said looking around the room once again. "Nah, they're not all that bad, I broke my arm once, but then again, I have never had to sleep in a hospital." She said hopping down beside me. "Now's your chance." I replied looking at the window outside. The moon was exceptionally bright, maybe it was a sign. Too bad it had to come to this, just to get my brothers back, it was a shame. "OK, Julianna, I've known you for a day, and I know you have a secret, and it's killing me not to know what it is, because it seems to be eating you." Lara said trying to catch my glance. Was she the ony one to notice? I mean, I don't think it's much of a secret, but people don't seem to notice at all. "Um, I'll tell you some other time." I said trying to stay away from her stare. "OK, but now I am going to quote Titanic...I am involved now, I can't turn away, we are now officially friends." Lara said. I never heard anyone say that before to me. And I had never seen that movie. "Is Titanic good?" I asked with a face. I know everyone in the whole entire world has seen Titanic at least twice, except me, and my family...I wonder why? (hinthint). "Oh wow, it's the best movie ever! Once we get out of here, I'm going to drag you to see it." Lara said with such enthusiasm that I would have hopped out of bed right then and ran to the theater. "I'm not sure if my parents will let me." I said putting my head down. "They'll let you, and if they don't we'll ask Jennifer to come with us, she can be cool when she wants to be." Lara said shrugging it off. couldn't help think, "Lucky you." I mean in the past few months, maybe lets say 10 months, since they left me, and I'm still not sure if they're back. "That would be great." I said with a hint of enthusiasm. "You know Julie, whenever you want to talk I'll be here." Lara said leaning over the bed. "Thats cool." I said laughing. "OK, now lets talk girl stuff, I still don't know that much about you." Lara said sitting back down onto her chair. OK, let's see, my real name is Raegan, Zac and I are in a way twins, well sort of, I mean he is only 8 months younger and stuff, hard to explain, and I'm hardly home." I said quickly. "Well, that explains a lot, my turn, My real name is Lara, I don't have a sorta twin brother, just Lara and my little brother, and I'm always home.' Lara said trying to beat my quickness. "I remember what it was like to always be home, the good ole' days." I said with a sigh. "Hey, I'd trade places with you any day." Lara said with a snort. "Believe me, if you knew what my family was all about, you'd think differently." I said looking straight at her this time. "I wish you'd tell me, but I understand if you don't want to yet, but anything beats, a father who is in jail, and a mother who couldn't care less about us." Lara said slightly blushing. "Aw Lar, I'm sorry, I would never have thought..." I said trailing off. I couldn't believe a father who could be in jail? Man my dad can barely riase his voice, and a mother who could'nt care, mom cares if we don't have dinner before seven o'clock. "Nah, don't worry about it, never met dad, mom isn't a great mom, I just stick with Jenn, she knows how it is." Lara said spinning in the chair. "But what about your younger brother? I mean what does he do? "Who Kyle? Oh yeah, well the little dude, went insane." Lara said trying to keep a straight face. "Oh cool, Zac's close to that." I said trying to act serious. "Haha, mom shipped him off to my aunt's house awhile back, she couldn't deal with him." Lara said trying to think back. "He is such a cute kid." Lara added. "That's horrible, you can have one of mine if you want....I mean, there's Zoe, no wait I wanna keep her, and Mackie, nah he's too cute, and then Avery, no not her, she's too sweet, or maybe Jess....nah, she's too sweet....well you can have Zac, Ike or Tay.' I said hopefully. "Yeah man, believe me, anyday." She said. "No you really don't want them." I said shaking my head. Maybe I shouldn't be talking yet, I might just want to keep them. "OK, Julie, please tell me what is wrong, I mean I swear I won't tell anyone your secret, but I can tell it's bothering you." Lara said with such sencerity that I almost told her. "Nah, don't worry about it, I'm fine." I said trying to laugh a little. "The car just scared me." I said. "I saw her eyes go down cast. "OK, just remember, you can tell me anytime." She said spinning in the stool again. "Yeah, I know." I said with a small sigh.
