Sophomore basketball player Mike Chappell has been given his realease from Duke University for the purpose of tranfering to another school, Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Friday.
The Southfield, Mich., native appeared in 68 games in his career, including 21 starts of the first 22 games this past year. He averages 7.1 points and 2.0 rebounds a game while helping the Blue Devils win the ACC regular season championship and advance to the NCAA South Regional title game with a 32-4 overall record.
"I have enjoyed coaching Mike the past two years," said Krzyzewski. "He has always represented Duke well on and off the court. I certainly wish him and his family well in the future."
The 6-8 foward shot 46.4 percent from the field, making 91-of-196 field goal, while accumulating 20 assists and 19 steals. He scored a career-high 18 points against Mercer on December 21, 1997.
"In my two years at Duke, I've enjoyed this experience - the students, the coaches and my teammates," said Chappell. "It has been beneficial to my development and growth as a basketball player, but I feel that it is now in my best interests to move on."
Now, For The Good News!!!!!
The 6-7 Carter, a Wooden Award finalist and member of the Wooden All-American Team, is expected to be a lottery pick in the June draft.
"I called around and found that he'll probably go anywhere from four to 10 in the draft," said Smith. "Two teams in need of a big guard expressed particular interest in Vince."
Carter and Jamison, college basketball's Player of the Year, led the Tar Heels to a 34-4 record and an appearance in their second straight Final Four, in which they lost to Utah in the national semifinals.
"It's hard to turn down your dreams and for players like Antawn and Vince, that's the NBA," said Guthridge. "I know I won't be as good a coach as I was this year without them."
The early departure of Carter and Jamison marks the second time in four years that North Carolina lost two underclassmen to the NBA draft after advancing to the Final Four. Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace entered the draft after their sophomore seasons at Carolina in 1995.
Carter averaged career highs of 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds as a junior, while shooting a team-best 59 percent (224-of-379) from the field and 41 percent (44-of-107) from three-point range this season.
Jamison, Arizona guard Mike Bibby and Kansas forward Paul Pierce are among the 16 underclassmen that have already announced their plans to enter the NBA draft.
The deadline to declare for the draft is Monday, May 10th.
