Cut out magazine pictures for adding to words and have your child(ren)
glue them on paper for you. Then make into a book...this can also be
used to make word and/or alphabet books.
On a clean dry surface spray shaving cream and allow your child(ren) to
draw with their fingers on it.
Take paint brushes and paint with water on walls or sidewalks. This can
be used to just paint or to paint letters, numbers, and or words. It
can also have evaporation added as a lesson.
Use washable sidewalk chalk to draw pictures, letters, numbers, words,
and or hopscotches such as the one for Kyla's Hopscotch.
Teach letters by drawing open letters and allowing your child(ren) to
color them in. We have done this with tshirts, plastic chairs either
alone or with Kyla to teach her words, letters, and numbers.
Have your child guess with you the names of street signs, and other
signs (when you are not driving) to teach them environmental print. I
use to play this game with a child whom I was trying to teach to read.
She got really good at it...This can be extended to doing the alphabet
from license plates and/or signs.
Draw shapes in and have your child(ren) color them in.
Have your child(ren) paint on paint books, paper, drawings with paint
and or water colors....this encourages understanding writing. This can
include finger painting. If you do not have washable paint adding
dishwashing liquid in a small quantity to the paint helps with clean
up. Also place the child on a washable surface or area, place a sheet,
newspapers, and or plastic sheet down. I set kyla at a table with a
very solid glass of water and water colors where the floor is linoleum.
You can consult your local library, the internet has many resources,
and electronic bookstores which have excellent resources at
great prices. I have a collection of my own.
I will be adding to this as I collect my ideas.
