Novella ~ a short novel

Two well know writers are Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway.  They both have distinctively different styles based on their backgrounds and the requirements set for them as writers.  This can be seen in their writing.  In Charles Dickens situation writers were paid by the word such that often novels tended to be lengthy and wordy.  In Ernest Hemingways situation his primary occupation was as a news writer in which space is limited such that each word must be selected carefully.  His writing style reflects this.

This is not to say that neither are good writers or better than the other - just that their styles are different and reflective of different periods of writing styles.  In Charles Dicken's novels he paints for you an entire world with written imagery.  In Ernest Hemingway's writing he gives the reader just enough such that only the absolutely neccessary information for the reader is written in his stories.

There are many different styles of writing. Each writing style requires work and mastery to be an accomplished effective work.  But for now we shall begin with a discussion on writing.

Purpose/Objective:
One does not have to have a purpose nor an objective specified - but specifying an objective or a purpose gives direction and keeps one on a specific train of thought or idea.  This is important  if the writing is intended as a form of information sharing for others or for future reference for yourself.

For example if my objective I have selected is to discuss writing for me to discuss airplanes would be completely irrelevant unless it was an inclusion on writing about airplanes.

Rules:
There are many rules in written language that must be followed such that when people read and interpret what you have written it is comprehensible.  But this is under the disciplines of understanding good grammar and English practises which one should have a fairly adequate knowledege of in the area and level at which one intends to write.

Writing Development:
The ability to write and develop a story is not completely dependent upon being able to utlize written language.  Just as the Egyptians used a more pictorial representation of language so can the beginning reader/writer.  Just as many beginning books are simply picture books so can the young child draw or even cut and paste to create a story.  For even drawings and pictures are a step towards mastering written language as the also are abstract representations of real things.
