Kyla is going to be four this month- She and I are learning the alphabet...
we have been using chalk to encourage
her to write...she drew hair the other day and said it was grandmother who was
visiting.
We saw a cartoon on shapes and I said well shapes are also symbols like letters
so why not do shapes. When I was drawing shapes Kyla wanted to hop so I made
it into hopscotch...She got triangles and the star really fast. I thought we
would share with you what we are learning together anyone can do this with their
child...All you have to do is draw it with washable sidewalk chalk. I bought two
buckets of it. And you can make your own with some basic recipes of washable
poster dry paints mixed with plaster of Paris...the recipe I do not remember...but sidewalk
chalk is not too expensive and is loads of fun for everyone...especially adults...and they
think your art is so good..so be sure to make them feel great with every attempt they make...
For it took more than one time for you to get that good...
Today we went over the shapes and colors in the hopscotch on at the website. She is really
enjoying the web for as long as her attention can be held...
Numeric symbols for numbers are very abstract when beginning to teach counting
to your child(ren) it helps to pick things that they like or that can keep their
attention for counting like favorite toys or items, pennies, or even fingers. Children
can usually learn to hold up there fingers after the age three to say their age...which is
a beginning in learning the concept of counting. I will be pointing to these and counting
with Kyla to teach her to read numbers along with teaching her the concepts of counting.
Shapes are also a standard concept taught in elementary school which often young children have difficulties with...In teaching shapes have the child point and say the shape, and the colors to teach colors...but one concept at a time is best. Then point to other things in the child's world with the same shape to transfer the concepts elsewhere and help make the memory more transferable and longer lasting. A less abstract concept is easier for a child to learn who is in the concrete stages of learning...that is why touching, talking about, tracing and hearing helps the young child learn better than just seeing something.
