DOUG KNIPFER 1968 - 1986 STATION AGENT JAC DEN RNO PHX TUS Dear Jake, I'm sorry to have to forward this information to you, but thought that you would like to put it in your Frontier News. Doug Knipfer passed away last Friday, March 8th, 2002 while at the Veteran's Hospital in Reno. He was 63. I know he was based in Denver, Jackson Hole, and Reno plus maybe Phoenix. I enjoyed the photo and comment re: Jackson crew in the Summer 2001 news. It brought back some good times. I was Jim Booth's wife and Doug lived with us in Jackson. They were always playing tricks on each other and I guess they will be doing it again now that they are together again. Thanks Jake! -Joanie Booth, Reno, Nv. (3/15/02) Hi Joanie, Thanks so much for letting me know about Doug. I found his obituary on the internet and will let his many friends at Frontier know about it. What a shock - I had heard from him not long ago subscribing to the FL NEWS. -Jake Lamkins (3/16/02) Sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was a good hand and friend. Doug have a cool one with Jim Booth for me. See ya when I get there. -Ron Abfalter (3/18/02) Shocked to hear about Doug but more shocked to hear he has been here in RNO for some time. When I came over to RNO with CO in 1988 I was told that all of the FL people had left RNO for other parts except for Joe Max Johnson, John Pappas and two other agents I did not know. Doug was an Agent in PHX and if I remember he was quite a cartoonist...he did one of me that I still have in my "stuff." A nice guy, funny and loved his job and people. So sorry I lost contact with him.........Take care. -Sam Cales (3/18/02) Yes, Doug was quite a cartoonist. He did lots of them for me when I was ALEA MEC Chairman 1980-84 putting out a newsletter. Just a fine fellow all around. It was a shock to me too because I heard from him not long ago and he didn't mention being ill. -Jake Lamkins (3/19/02) Today was the first I had heard about Doug. It was a shock, Doug was one heck of a guy. -Ken Wientjes, JAC (3/26/02) Good Morning. It seems that the only time I seem to get to talk to you is when it is with sadness. Doug Knipfer, died last month from cancer.. He was living in Reno, Nevada area. He worked many places with Frontier but was with us in Denver in the early years. I know that Jake has more info on his Web site.. so please check there.. Phil Bolt also Died this past week. He worked on the Ramp for many years in Denver. He never missed a reunion.. We became closer in the past 15 years then when we were all at Fl.. Again.. with sadness.. I would enjoy hearing from any of you from time to time. As we all grow older it is nice to hear from other Fl family Members..So please keep in touch Now with a simple moment and millions of thoughts and memories for those who have passed.. Your old Friend, -Eric Mason (4/29/02) I just found four of Doug's cartoons in an old scrapbook. I've scanned them and posted here for your enjoyment. These toons deal with the stress and distress of FL's last years. They were published in the ALEA newsletter I edited 1980-84 when I was ALEA Master Chairman. Rest in peace, Doug, my old friend. -Jake Lamkins (10/24/03) DEN SSA Buck Hawk sent three more cartoons by Doug. Two of them I'm not certain but they are in Doug's flavor of cartooning so I will post them. D F KNIPFER Station agent seniority date of 4/10/68, emp# 04994, on the 1/1/86 FL/ALEA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (4/4/10) Posted at the FL Club: Subject: Updated memorial webpage DOUG KNIPFER 1968 - 1986 STATION AGENT JAC DEN RNO PHX http://fal-1.tripod.com/Doug_Knipfer.html Got several more of Doug's cartoons from DEN SSA Buck Hawk. Somewhere I have a bar napkin that he did a portrait of one of the other agents. Probably at the Silver Dollar in the Wort Hotel! Jake Lamkins Doug Knipfer, another great guy gone west too soon. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Doug_Knipfer.html Jack McLaughlin Yes, that is definitely his work. Great guy! I think he was at the party for the end of season at West Yellowstone one year.
