My Mom was living in Hot Springs, Arkansaw at the time and I returned there after being processed out at Travis AFB, California. About a week after getting back to Hot Springs, I went out to the airport with the idea of applying at all four airlines serving the city. The ticket counters were all in a row and I started at the first, Delta Airlines. The gentleman behind the counter said, "I'm sorry, but Atlanta does all our hiring". Next was Braniff Airlines and the fellow allowed as how everybody with them got hired down in Texas somewhere. Then I went to Trans Texas where the guy told me that Dallas did their hiring. That left only one, Central Airlines, down in a corner behind a pillar. When I got to it there was a well dressed man in a suit with a name tag that said "Jeff Gilbert, Manager". He told me that all their hiring was done in Ft. Worth but he had an application and would be glad to send it in for me. I went to Ft. Worth for an interview with Truman Jones and got a call from him a few days later offering me a job as a Passenger Service Agent in my choice of four cities: Kansas City, Harrison, AR, Paris, TX or Fayetteville, AR. I chose Fayetteville since I wanted to continue my college work. I started August 26, 1964. Little did I know everything airline in my life would end almost exactly 22 years later. Anyway, it was Jeff who opened the door of opportunity for me. -Jake Lamkins (4/15/00) I do not have a scanner, so find enclosed a picture of James. It was taken in the Spring of 1986 before he started going down so fast from Lou Gehrig's disease. I do not need the picture back. Also enclosed is a copy of a picture I thought you might find interesting. It was taken in September 1967, before the changeover to Frontier. It is the five guys that worked HOT together for so many years. -Geraldine Greer (James Greer's widow) (6/12/01) New Central Airline Manager1 Assumes Duties Jeff Gilbert, 26, a native of Dallas Tex., chief agent for Central Airlines at Dallas for the past four years, has taken over here as station manager for Central, succeeding Robert Addle who resigned to accept a position as control tower operator for the Civil Aeronautics Administration. Gilbert’s airline office is at Memorial Field airport. Gilbert is married and the father of three children. He and his family presently reside at 416 South Patterson. They are members of St. John’s Catholic church and he, through his company, has already joined the Spa Chamber of Commerce. Gilbert attende4 college at St. Edward’s University at Austin, Tex. (From undated HOT newspaper clipping in memorabilia sent by wife Mary Agnes. It would probably be in 1957 since Jeff started in 1953 & spent 4 years in DAL) -Jake Lamkins (3/14/04) Listed as J.F. Gilbert on 1953 CN seniority list and date of hire at CN 2/19/53 working in DAL. Appears to be a typo on his middle initial. -Jake Lamkins (3/14/04) The SSDI index is apparently wrong. Jeff's widow, Mary Agnes, sent a burial note which shows Jeff's death date as Feb 18, 1995. I just found it in an old scrapbook -Jake Lamkins (11/15/04) Subject: 1,000 Consecutive On-Time Departures, March 19, 1975. After the merger I became a Sales Rep for FL (when the PA program shut down) working out of STL. The cities I covered were TBN, HRO, FYV, FSM, HOT, LIT, MEM. Think about who were the Managers of those stations. What a group, I was old CN and so were they, we had a ball. Do you remember the Jeff Gilbert incident when he streaked the Department Store in HOT. How many kids did he have? Seems to me it was about a Bakers Dozen. Jeff was real nice guy and I enjoyed working with him. -Chuck Fahrenholz (10/3/06) Jeff was indeed a very nice guy. He gave me an application for CN in Aug 1964 at HOT. I had gone thru DL, BN & TT and none would give me one. CN was at the end - the last one. I always had a special regard for Jeff because of that. Yes, I recall the streaking incident very well. It got Jeff busted out of HOT manager and he ended up in ABQ as a TCA. His wife Mary Agnes always felt Jeff had a small stroke which caused the streaking episode. It certainly was out of character. In 1985, Jeff had a massive stroke which should have killed him. Instead, it left him in a coma for ten years. He died Feb 18, 1995. Attached is his burial note. -Jake Lamkins (10/3/06) This picture was taken about 1969 / 1970. ( Not exactly sure of the date ) I was a Sales Rep. working out of the STL. Regional Sales Office at the time. Art Giffin was the Reg. Sales Magr. (Promoted to DEN SA and later became an Author and published two books that I know of ) the other Reps. were Duane Jackson, ( Promoted to D.S.M. ABQ ) Alan Soukup, ( Left to be a Cop in OMA, and was promoted to Lt. Detective ) and Chuck Nass ( Left to start a successful Truck Automotive Parts Business in S.D. ) I moved not too long after this to open the Chicago Sales Office, when we started our brief Midway service. ( With Dick Cummins and Rich Gryczkowski - SKI ) I was replaced by Ken Woods who later ran the BN training Center for FL Holdings. My territory at that time was TBN, HRO, FYV, FSM, HOT, LIT, and MEM. Jeff Gilbert was the HOT Manager. Frontier sponsored a race during the Arkansas Derby and Kathie presented the Trophy to the winning Owner and Jockey. They took several pictures of the event and this is one of them. The P.R. guy for the track wanted one of Kathie kissing the winning jockey but she kissed the horse on the nose instead (And has been married to the other end of that horse for 38 years) and that's the one that was published in all the newspapers. -Chuck Fahrenholz (1/26/10) I did not have a file on several of those you mentioned, but now I do. Jeff Gilbert gave me my application to work at CN in August, 1964. He got busted as HOT manager for a streaking incident and ended up in ABQ as an agent. He had a stroke there which left him in a coma the last ten years of his life. His wife, Mary Agnes, told me she thought he must have had a small stroke to do the streaking thing in HOT because it was so totally unlike him. He died Feb 15, 1995, three weeks shy of his 65th birthday. A tragic end to a really fine fellow. -Jake Lamkins (1/27/10) Facebook: Jake Lamkins I mentioned HOT manager Jeff Gilbert in a recent post and now his FL uniform hat is for sale at Ebay. Jeff was an ABQ TCA in FL's last years then spent about ten years in a coma from a stroke. A fine fellow who deserved better.
