Distribution
The Australian Bass is restricted to the coastal drainages between the Mary River, Qld, and tributaries of the Gippsland Lakes, Vic. Specimens are commonly caught outside these ranges, it is thought that these are probably hatchery reared escapees from farm dams.

Growth and Size
Bass rarely get bigger than 4kg (8.8lbs), a bass of this size is usually a once in a life time catch.

Species Information
Bass will hybridise with it's close relative, the Estuary Perch in overlapping areas of distribution, particularly in Victorian drainages. Hybrids can only be made successfully with a bass mother.

Australian Bass is a member of the family Percichthidae. This family also includes other premier native sportfish like the Murray, Eastern and Trout Cods, Macquarie Perch, Estuary Perch and Golden Perch (Yellowbelly)
