Stokes Mortar Position.

The Americans adopted the British Stokes Trench Mortar soon after entering the War. Hurling a 3inch shell shaped like a common rolling pin its range was easily over 100 yards. The Stokes could be used launch for high explosive, smoke or gas shells into the lines of the enemy. A very versatile machine it was used in the vicinity of the front lines and could be quickly moved if required. An experienced crew could obtain a great deal of accuracy and keep over 10 shells in the air at one time if needed.
