"Prelude To A Kiss" - part 2

Transcribed by Februari

Scene: SS Icehouse.

Jen and Dawson are sitting at the counter.

Jen: You were brilliant today, you really put that Nellie Olsen right in her place.

Dawson: Thankyou. But the real filming has yet to come.

(Joey comes to take their order)

Joey: Hello. What can I get you guys this evening?

Dawson: We'll have two chicken clubs and two cokes.

Jen: No mayo on mine.

Joey: May I suggest Bodie's non-fat sauce? It's great on the clubs.

Jen: Sold.

Dawson: Uh, sandwiches to go, cokes while we wait. We're catching 'magic hour' tonight. The ruins, remember?

Joey: Oh yeah! I'll put a rush on it. (she leaves)

Jen: What* has gotten into Joey?!

Dawson: I don't know, it's bizarre!

Cut to Joey fixing the drinks

Bessie: You were late. Look, I'm in charge until you're eighteen or Dad gets parole, which ever comes first. Look, we have to help each other out, Joey. It's just the way it has to be.

Joey: I'm sorry, ruin my good mood. I as just trying to have a moment of happiness in my otherwise pathetic existence. You can relate, can't you?

She sees Anderson approaching, and hurries the cokes.

Bessie: What is it?

Joey: Nothing. (She moves in front of the counter and joins Dawson and Jen) Mind if I join you? I'm on a break. (She throws the apron over the counter)

Jen: Sure.

(Anderson waves to Joey, and she waves back)

Jen: Who's that?

Joey: (a little too quickly) Nobody.

Jen: Pretty cute nobody!

Dawson: Who?

Anderson joins them.

Anderson: Hey, Deborah!

Joey: Hey.

Anderson: What are you doing here, I thought you had to go and meet your parents.

Joey: I...

Dawson: Who's Deborah?

Anderson: (indicating Joey) She's Deborah.

Dawson: (laughing) No she's not! (Joey glares at him)

Anderson: Oh, she's not? Well then, who did I spend the afternoon with, and imposter? (He laughs and Joey smiles weakly)

Jen: It's just that... uh... we don't call her Deborah. She's just Deb to us.

Anderson: Are you guys from New York as well?

Dawson: Wait a minute, what's going on??

Jen: Uh, yeah, We're just passing through, though. Deb and I go to school together. And you are...?

Anderson: Anderson. Deborah and I went sailing today.

Dawson: Oh. Would you like to join us, Deb's friend whom we've never met? Ever?

Anderson: No thanks, I ordered take out.

Bessie: Sandwiches up.

(There is a pause. Joey doesn't move)

Dawson: Y'know, Anderson, the food's great here, but the service is a little iffy.

Anderson: (to Joey) You think your parents might let you out tonight?

Joey: Uh, I dunno, big family scrabble tournament tonight.

Bessie: Uh, Joey...?

Joey: I... uh... might be able to sneak away later...

Anderson: Right, well - you know where I'll be.

Bessie: Planet Earth to Joey!

Joey: I'll come by after the game.

Dawson: Uh, you know, "charade" is a great seven-letter word you can use in that scrabble game. (Joey and Jen kick him from both sides)

Anderson: ...Uh, I must have come right in the middle of something.

(Bodie comes over and gives Dawson the sandwiches)

Bodie: There you go. That's $7.50. (to Joey) Uh, miss? Would you care for anything?

Joey: (with relief) No, but thankyou.

Bodie: Any time.

Anderson: Uh, I called in a take-out.

Bodie: Right this way.

Jen: It was really nice meeting you.

Anderson: Yeah, see you guys later.

Joey: Yeah.

Cut between Anderson, Joey, Bessie, Dawson and Jen

Jen: Well.

********
Scene: Corridor of the school.

Pacey is coming along in the wheelchair. Tamara is talking to Mr. Gold in a classroom.

Mr. Gold: Are you kidding? That's my favourite! Isn't it yours?

Tamara: No, my favourite scene is where Streisand meets up with Redford years later in the street, and they speak pleasantly...

Mr. Gold: ... and cordially... And she brushes the hair off his forehead (he does this to Tamara) the way she did when they first met years ago.

Tamara: Oh, it kills me. So bitter sweet, they belong together.

Mr. Gold: But they could never go back to the way they were.

Tamara: Oh, stop, I'm gonna cry right now!

(Pacey winces outside the door)

Mr. Gold: (laughs) Let's get out of here. I'll alk you home. We can take the scenic route.

Tamara: Oh, will you hold my hand like Katie and Covet? (?)

Mr. Gold: Maybe more...!

Tamara: Ooh! I'll get my things. (Pacey moves away from the door.)

Tamara walks around the corner and sees Pacey.

Pacey: Hello, Tamara.

Tamara: (leaning close to him) Mr. Gold is right around the corner.

Pacey: I know, I *heard*, he's walking you *home*! (He gets up and follows her up the stairs)

Tamara: Well, Mr. Gold is a friend of mine.

Pacey: Oh, clearly.

Tamara: We're *friends*, Pacey.

Pacey: I know what you do with your students, so I guess he's in for one heck of a ride.

Tamara: Look, you've got to stop with this before it gets out of hand!

Pacey: I think it's already out of hand.

Tamara: (turning) I have to go.

Pacey: (grabs her arm) No, wait, wait.

Tamara: (turns to face him) What do you want from me?!

Pacey: (Pause, He searches in her eyes) You. I want you!

She is clearly touched.

********
Scene: The ruins.

Dawson and Jen are walking through a tunnel-thing.

Dawson: We're not actually supposed to be here, the guy's dead and his son's a real ass, so if you see someone run like hell.

Jen: (amused) Oh, so we're trespassing now, are we?

Dawson: Yes we are!

Jen: So, what is this place?

Dawson: The monster's secret haven.

Jen: No, for real, what is it? It's incredible.

Dawson: It's part of some guy's estate, he built it for his dead wife. Before she died. She, uh, loved Greece, it was her favourite spot. But then she got sick and couldn't travel any more, so he brought Greece to her.

Jen: That is so romantic.

Dawson: Yeah?

Jen: I think so.

(Dawson smiles. That was the whole point)

Cut to the fountain.

Jen: This is absolutely beautiful!

Dawson: We've gotta hurry, or we're gonna lose the sun.

Jen: So, uh, what do you want me to do here?

Dawson: Well, give me that (he takes the bag with the camera tripod in it). Just sit right there, and watch me as I create the moment. (He hangs cloth, and plays a stereo) I was thinking of using this for the closing sequence. What do you think?

Jen: It's a little schmultzy considering it's a horror film.

Dawson: Yeah, but I was going for tragedy. See, the monster's dead, but in his death Penelope finds understanding. She comes here to his secret place to say goodbye. It's thematic. (Pause) It kinda balances out all the blood.

Jen: I see.

Dawson: You do?

Jen: Yeah.

Dawson: Ready?

Jen: Yeah! Okay, so, um - what do I do, what's my direction?

Dawson: That of longing, incredible sadness. (Jen starts, and Dawson films her) Think about what just happened - you've just discovered that the monster you killed was really the man you loved. The victim of an experiment gone terribly wrong. Action. (There is a long pause as her films her.) Cut! That's great!

Jen: Was that okay? 'Cause I can do it again...

Dawson: That was... you are amazing!

Jen: (modest) Well, sadness is my specialty. Should we do it again, I'm not sure...

Dawson: No, it was perfect.

Jen: (laughing) Well, I had a good director.

Dawson: And I had a good actress. (Long pause) So.

Jen: So, uh...

Dawson: It seems a shame to waste all this production design. The sunset... the music... soft candlelight... (He leans in to kiss her. Over his shoulder, she sees that the monitor is still on.)

Jen: Wait, wait, wait a minute... What are you doing?

Dawson: Um...

********
Scene: The docks.

Anderson is playing the violin. Joey approaches.

Joey: You're pretty good at that thing.

Anderson: Hey! I was hoping you'd show up. (He gets off the boat and she walks towards him) Listen, uh... we leave tomorrow. But I come to New York. All the time. I'll take you out to dinner - the Rainbow Room. We can dance the night away.

Pause

Joey: I'm not a very good dancer, Anderson. And I prefer Boulet, it's my haunt, I'm an East-side girl.

Anderson: (confused) But Boulet... isn't... Let me get you my number. (He re-boards the boat. Joey realises she's said something wrong. He returns, and gives her a slip of paper) Call me. Would you?

Joey: (nodding) Yeah.

He tucks her hair behind her ears, and they kiss. It isn't stated, but you get the impression that it's Joey's first.

Anderson: Can I walk you somewhere?

Joey: (shakes her head) No. No, you have to stay right here. In the moonlight. It's where you belong. (Pause) Bye. (she leaves.)

********
Scene: Ruins.

Jen: Dawson, you were video-taping a really private moment!

Dawson: Yeah, I know... let me explain. I wanted... I wanted the moment to be perfect between us. I wanted to create something special, something worthy of how special I think you are.

Jen: Dawson... you just try too hard, you're over-zealous.

Dawson: It's my downfall.

Jen: Why can't you just let the moment exist, why do you always feel the need to make it happen?

Dawson: I don't know, I don't know, I just - I do. (Pause) I don't know what else to say, Jen, except that my intentions are nothing short of honourable. (Pause) I've never met anyone like you before, Jen, you scare me.

Jen: I scare you?!

Dawson: I *love* the way you scare me, but it makes me nervous. And then I o or say something stupid, and then I spend al this energy coming up with ideas to be smart so you wont think I'm stupid, but they ultimately backfire, making me look even more stupid - it's just a vicious cycle. And I'm really at the end of my rope right now, because all I want to do is kiss you, and I'm afraid that if I don't kiss you soon I'm going to explode.

Jen: Huh. You know, Dawson, this really sucks.

Dawson: Why?

Jen: Now *I'm* scared!

Dawson: Why?!

Jen: The kiss, the kiss - I mean, you've built this kiss up to be such a big deal. What happens if I'm a disappointment?

Dawson: (contemplates this) Never happen. (Jen isn't so sure)

********
Scene: Car.

Bessie and Bodie are in the front. Joey squeezes in too, and closes the door.

Bessie: (smiling) Where were you?!

Joey: Nowhere!

Bessie: Hey, thanks for helping me out today.

Joey: She's being nice, Bodie. What does this mean?

Bodie: Uh, tread lightly.

(Pause)

Joey: Um... Boulet, that restaurant in New York, it's on the East side, isn't it?

Bodie: No, no, no, it's in Tri-Becka (?). And it closed down a couple of years ago. They had a great chef, though. Why?

Joey: (crestfallen) No reason.

(She looks at Anderson's note in her hand. The car starts, and she drops the pice of paper out of the window.)

********
Scene: The ruins.

Dawson and Jen are tidying up.

Dawson: The percentage of dumb things I do is rising around you. What does it mean when you keep doing dumb things around the same girl?

Jen: Well, I'm sure it's something extremely Freudian.

(They hear a car pull up)

Dawson: Oh, no.

Jen: What? What? What?!

Dawson: We've gotta hide! (They move the stuff. Dawson puts the camera, on the tripod, behind a tree so it can't be easily seen) Let's go.

Jen: Where are we going? (He takes her hand)

Dawson: I dunno. Hurry.

Jen: Who's coming?! (They hide in a hole-thing) What do we do?

We see two figures walking where Dawson and Jen just were. They are laughing. They walk in front of the camera, and it is displayed on the monitor - it's Tamara and Pacey.

Jen: (whispering) Dawson, this is really gross, it smells...

Dawson: I know. Shh.

Jen: Oh, God, there's like stuff hanging here. (She brushes stuff out of her hair)

Dawson: Shh, shh! It's probably just cobwebs or something.

He brushes her hair with his hands. Their eyes lock. He leans to her, and they kiss. It's far more romantic than Dawson could have planned.

The camera cuts to the fountain. It pans across to the monitor. You can see Tamara pressing someone up against a tree - its Pacey, but you can't tell from the camera shot.

Cut to Tamara lying on the grass, with Pacey lying behind her. Her leans over the top of her, and kisses her neck. He wraps his arms around her, and she moves closer.
