DEPUTY RANDY JENNINGS
Butte County Sheriffs Department, California, USA
Deputy Randal Jennings, 38, was shot and killed on May 22, 1997, after being involved in a gun fight with a domestic dispute suspect. Dep. Jennings had responded to a 911 call in which a man was beating his wife. Upon arrival a gun battle ensued in a dark field and Dep. Jennings was struck five times, twice in the neck, once in the wrist, and two shots were stopped by his vest. Although mortally wounded, Randy was able to return fire and kill the perp with one shot. He then called in his injury, lay down under an olive (peace) tree, and died. He is survived by his wife Terry, an Orville police officer. She drove his cruiser from the scene of his death and on reaching the office made his last radio call for him.."Butte County SO 30, now 10-10"
Somebody killed a policeman today, and a part of America died. A piece of our country he swore to protect, will be buried with him at his side. The suspect that shot him will stand up in court, with counsel demanding his rights. While a young widowed mother must work for her kids, and spend many long, lonely nights. The beat that he walked was a battle field too, just as if he'd gone off to war. Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast, to his name they will add a gold star. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today, in your home town or in mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, a cop put his life on the line. Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call, of himself gave his all, And A Part Of America Died.
