"Bill"

The call came in shortly before 9:15pm.
That hot, clear, October night
When dispatch gave the alarm...
“CP-113, respond to a signal 35-D
At 1280 Sistrunk Road, No.2”

Bill McIntosh, was off-duty, at the convenience store
At LA. 378, around the corner from the call
Checking on his daughter... but as all Officers,
He knew his job was to serve and protect the public.

He climbed into his unit, as he always did
For 7 years or so, the dispatcher keyed her
Mike, with urgency this time...

“I have a signal 35-D, you’re needed at the scene!
Proceed at once to 1280 Sistrunk Road, No. 2
And go a safe code three.”

Bill keyed, “10-4, enroute”
With lights and siren, rubber peeled...
A simple call, one couple involved,
Which should have been routine...

Became an Officer’s nightmare...

A friendly knock on the door
Greeted by an angry man with a Gun...
No time to run... no time to think...
All was over for Bill in a blink...

A cop’s nightmare had begun
And ended all in one split second...
Another Officer was dispatched,
Unknowing what had happened

To his fellow Officer...

That Bill was gone... he was dead and unable
To call for help or to warn him of the danger.

All was crazy... with sirens and lights
that October night.

Officers begin to arrive at the scene...
One by one, kneeling down beside Bill,
Checking for pulse and breathing...

“It’s over our fellow Officer is lost.”
They wept in deep compassion...
For Bill was dead...

“Why, no one will ever understand...”
