Pegging To Win

Conclusions

To sum up my play of these hands, I would have to say that I believe in being adaptable. Yes, I have my hat handed to me when it is my turn to watch someone peg their way down fourth street. I just remember that sometimes, there just is not a thing you can do to stop someone, the hands just fit together too well. Sometimes I don't pay enough attention and I am the loser of the game. Honestly, I should do better at tracking other peoples great finishes against me so that I can learn something to apply to my game. That might be the best lesson to take from this page.

Thoughts

1) If the other guy knows what card you are going to play next, he is going to eat your lunch.

2) If you out peg the other guy unconventionally once, he won't stop thinking that you are leading him into some other trap for the rest of the game. I have been called a tricky pegger by players that I have a lot of respect for, at least that is what they call me when they aren't questioning my pedigree.

3) Never give up on a game, (unless the dealer is the dead hole and you are more than 9 holes back, )* stay attentive, and don't make careless mistakes. You might suddenly find yourself wishing you had one more point to pull out a game.

4) Never forget what cards you threw to the crib.

5) Learn the RIGHT way to play a hand and learn the RIGHT TIME to not play it that way.

6) Learn the time to play off obvious pegging chances that are set ups. Learn how to mask your play by making that obvious set up at a time when your opponent should be playing off.

* Why 9 holes?** Thinking that the dealer has 4 face cards (J Q Q K) and you have one face (10) and three 2's or three 3's, Lead the 10 he plays the safe K, you play a 2 (or 3) he says "GO" and you pair for 2, and triple for 6, and "GO" for a total of 9 points. If you are 9 points or less from winning the game, YOU MAY STILL HAVE A CHANCE! What if he has a 5 and not the faces? Well then you already had lost so TRYING won't hurt, if you have NOT already lost, NOT trying WILL hurt!

** I have to revise this number. At a recent tournament at the begining of a game I was dealing and held 2,3,4,4. My opponent led a 7, I played a 4, she played a 6 and my mind spun a strategy. I played the 2. She found herself stuck with two 5's. She plays a 5, I play a 3 for a run of six, She says "GO", I play the last 4 for a run of five and a 31 for two. She takes her last card, counts and pegs her dozen, then I count my ten point hand and eight point crib and find myself sitting out at hole 31 after one hand. I pegged 13 points as dealer before my opponent pegs one. Imagine pegging out from hole 13 when your opponent is sitting in the dead hole.
