Chapter 4

"Open your eyes."

Peter woke up first that morning. He got out of bed, and put his feet down on the cold wooden floor. He looked over at the bed adjacent to his, and saw Davy sound asleep. He had figured he would be; Peter and Mike always woke up first. Peter walked into the kitchen to get a glass of orange juice. He glanced over at the couch, and saw a girl sleeping on it. Peter did a double take, and almost dropped his glass. He walked over to the couch to get a closer look. He saw a beautiful girl. He could barely make out the faint bruises and cuts that were on her face, and he noticed that she had one arm in a sling. Suddenly, her eyes fluttered open. She looked terrified, and Peter took a step back.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Peter said quickly. "I'm Peter Tork; I live here." He said, reaching down to shake her hand. He gave her a big smile; causing her to smile back.

"I'm Angel Carlisle." She said, taking his hand. "I'm a friend of Micky's." Peter gave her a surprised look, and then they both heard footsteps coming down the stairs. He saw Mike stop dead in his tracks midway down the stairs.

"Mike, this is Angel; she's Micky's friend." Peter said with a smile. Mike came down the stairs, and took his place beside Peter. Then Davy came in from his room.

"Ello'!" He greeted Angel. He didn't know who she was, but he didn't mind having a beautiful girl under his roof. Angel smiled at him.

"Someone should wake Micky up." Said Mike, glaring at Peter. Davy also looked at Peter.

"I'll do it." Volunteered Angel. They looked at her like she was crazy, but didn't protest. Angel got up, and they all laughed inwardly at the sight of her in Micky's nightgown. Angel walked up the stairs slowly, careful of her sprained ankle. She entered Micky's room, and saw him asleep, covered in a blue quilt. She walked over to him, and leaned down to his ear. "Wake up sleeping beauty" she said softly, her lips lightly brushing his ear as she spoke. He opened his eyes, and looked up. For a moment, he thought he was still dreaming. Then he realized he wasn't. He grinned at Angel, and sat up slowly. He glanced over, and saw Mike's empty bed. 'They're probably all awake' he thought to himself.

"Good morning to you too." He said jokingly, and stepped out of bed.

"Your friends are all awake, and they want to know why I'm here." She said seriously.

"What did they say to you?" He asked, hoping they hadn't been rude. He didn't think they would be, but you could never tell with them.

"Oh nothing, but they are about to start asking questions. So I volunteered to wake you up." Angel looked at Micky for a second before turning away to look out the window.

"That was a bold move;" he said jokingly "they always make poor Peter wake me up." She sat down on his bed, and looked up at him.

"What are you going to tell them?" Angel asked; sounding a bit worried. He sat down beside her, and gently touched her arm to reassure her.

"I'll just say that you're going to be staying with us for a few days. Don't worry Angel, everything is gonna be fine." She moved a little closer to him, and rested her hand on his knee. She looked into his eyes, and was about to move even closer, but she stopped herself, and jumped up quickly.

"You should go talk to them now." She said, her voice full of tension. 'That was a close one.' she thought to herself. She had almost given in to the way she felt about Micky.

"Yeah, I'll go do that." He said softly, and totally confused. 'Why is she acting like this?' he asked himself. Micky was completely puzzled as he walked down the stairs behind Angel. She walked over, and sat down on the couch quickly. He realized her ankle might be bothering her. "How's your ankle?" he asked "Do you need some aspirin or something?"

"No, I'm okay." She replied. Micky walked over to the counter and picked up the orange juice where Peter had left it. "You want some Angel?" he asked, turning in her direction. She nodded, and asked politely. All the while, Peter, Mike, and Davy were staring at them in utter confusion. They all surrounded Micky in the kitchen. "Hey, what's the big idea?" Micky whispered as the dragged him into Davy and Peter's room.

"We'll be right back," Mike said to Angel "we just need to talk to Micky alone for a second." Angel nodded, and sipped at her orange juice.

"Micky, you have got some explaining to do." Mike said patiently. They all looked at Micky in silence.

"Ok, Angel is gonna stay here for a few days." Micky said quietly, and then braced himself for a reaction.

"What?!?!?!?" Mike said "What do you mean she's staying here?"

"Well she's renting a house down the street, but she needs a place to stay until the paperwork is all done. She was going to have to stay at the apartment that she had so many bad memories of, and I just couldn't let her. I'm sorry guys, I hope it's ok with you." They all looked at each other. Peter put his hand on Micky's shoulder.

"It's fine with me Micky," he said with a smile "she seems really nice."

"Thanks Pete." Micky said back.

"Fine with me too." Davy said. "I don't mind having a pretty girl staying 'ere!" Micky laughed. The only one left was Mike.

"Well Mick, since you're doing her a favor..." he trailed off. Micky gave him a huge smile.

"Thanks Mike!" he said happily "You won't even know she's here." They all left the room together, and saw Angel on the couch playing her guitar. She was playing an intricate riff, and they were all impressed. They were all silent until she was done.

"Wow, that was great." Peter said with a big smile. She turned around to see them all standing there.

"I was just,...playing around." She said softly, not knowing what else to say. A silence fell over the room for a moment. "So what do you guys want for breakfast?" Angel asked, breaking the silence.

"You don't hafta make breakfast!" Micky said quickly, he didn't want her to think she had to be a housekeeper while she was there. Peter also spoke up.

"Yeah, I'll make it!" He said with a smile, and the other three groaned. "What?" he asked innocently. Angel giggled, she remembered what Micky had told her about Peter's cooking.

"I don't mind, I love to cook." She said honestly. She had learned when she was young, and Billy had always had her cooking for him. "Do blueberry pancakes and toast sound ok?" She asked, and they all nodded. Angel got up from the couch, went into the kitchen, and got to work.

"I'll help you." Peter said sweetly.

"Ok," Angel said, at least she could keep an eye on him and make sure he didn't add any 'secret' ingredients. Peter walked into the kitchen and stood beside Angel.

"What can I do?" He asked. She thought for a moment.

"You can help me make the batter." She said, and they started to do so. Angel and Peter were in the kitchen cooking for a while, and they started to talk Peter asked about her and Micky, and Angel's voice got tense.

"What do you mean?" she asked, turning her back so that Peter couldn't see her face.

"How'd you get to be friends with Micky?" he asked, worried that he had touched on a bad subject.

"Oh that." She said laughingly. She was a little tightly wound when it came to talking about Micky. She was starting to get attached to him, and that was never a good thing. "I was in the hospital and we just got to talking." She said.

"What happened? I mean, why were you in the hospital?" the smile faded from her face now. Peter had asked the question to naïvely, and the answer was so terrible. Peter looked into her eyes and saw that he had hit a nerve. "Never mind," he said softly. "you don't have to tell me." He turned to walk across the room. She grabbed his arm, and he turned around.

"It's ok Peter, I'll tell you why." Angel whispered, and he listened as she did. Peter stood there in shock as he heard of the horror that she had been through. When she was done telling him the grim story, Peter hugged her gently.

"That's awful." He said solemnly. "I'm so sorry."

"It's ok Peter," Angel said "I'm fine now, and that's all that's important, right?"

"Right." Peter said. "Hey, are those pancakes supposed to be black?" Angel looked at the stove and saw the first two pancakes they had put on the stove a dark shade of brown.

"Damn it!" She said, embarrassed. She looked at Peter sheepishly. "Well who eats the first pancakes anyway?" she asked, and Peter laughed out loud. He took the burnt pancakes out of the pan and threw them away. They started to cook again, and didn't burn anymore pancakes.

The whole time they were cooking; Micky, Davy, and Mike were taking turns showering. By the time breakfast was done, they had all showered. Angel claimed she wasn't hungry, and took her shower while they all ate breakfast. Micky glared at Peter, he had seen him hug Angel and he wasn't pleased about it. Peter didn't realize this, and sat at the table happily, humming 'Auntie Grizelda' to himself. Davy saw the looks that Micky was giving Peter, and was trying not to bust out laughing. Mike also noticed the looks, and laughed to himself. He'd never seen Micky act so possessive over a girl before, and it was quite amusing. Peter finally caught on, and gave Micky a questioning glance.

"What's wrong Micky? You look upset." He said. Davy couldn't contain himself anymore, and he busted out laughing. Micky gave him a dirty look.

"Why were you hugging Angel in the kitchen?" Micky asked. As he said this, he realized how stupid it sounded. Peter gave him a confused look.

"She was upset." Peter said, his mouth full of pancakes. "She told me about...never mind." He looked down at his plate. Micky knew Peter meant she had told him about Billy.

"It's ok Pete." Micky said, shooting him a knowing glance. Peter smiled, and his dimples carved in his cheeks.

"These pancakes are great." Mike said, changing the subject. He didn't know what they were talking about, and he didn't like being left out of conversations. "I can tell who did most of the cooking." He said, and Micky laughed.

"Hey!" Peter said, and Davy started to laugh as well. Angel came out of the bathroom a few minutes later, wearing the navy blue outfit she had worn the night before. They all stared at her for a second, then quickly turned away.

"So how are the pancakes?" She asked, and they all laughed.

Micky had the day off work, as did the rest of the guys because it was a Saturday. He had driven Angel to the police station so that she could pick up some of her things. The rest was furniture, which would be moved into her beach house when she moved in. She had been really quiet the whole day, and he couldn't figure out way. It was as if she went out of her way to avoid him. 'Did I do something wrong?' he wanted to say, but his question remained unasked. Finally, he just couldn't take it anymore; he had to say something.

"How come you're quiet today? Is something wrong?" Micky asked, sounding concerned. 'We're getting too close.' Angel thought to herself. 'I don't want you to hurt me like my father and Billy did'; but she too didn't speak her thoughts.

"I'm just really drained." She said, which was true. "From those tests and all." Micky gave her a concerned look. "I'm ok though." She said, not wanting him to worry about her. "I can't wait to take some pictures of the beach." Angel said excitedly. She had gotten her camera from the police station, and was anxious to start photographing things again. Micky smiled at her.

"Do you have any of your work with you?" he asked, curious to see what kind of pictures she took. She grinned at him, and pulled a photo album from the back seat.

"Here's the most recent stuff I did." She said. They were at the beach now, and Micky pulled the car over. "It's such a groovey day, you wanna sit on the beach while I take some pictures?" He agreed, and they got out of the car.

Micky sat on a sand dune near the pad and looked at the album. He'd never seen anyone make simple things so beautiful. There were pictures of someone's feet, he'd never been so fascinated by feet before. While he was looking at the pictures, Angel was taking new ones. She took pictures of everything; children in the water, the pad, the ocean, the sky, her new beach house; then she turned to Micky.

"Is it alright if I take your picture?" She asked, and he nodded. Then he smiled, prepared for her to take the picture. "Don't smile." She said softly. She walked over to him, and unbuttoned the first three buttons of his light blue button down shirt. He gave her a puzzled look, but didn't protest. Then she messed up his hair a little, making his curls blow in the wind. She took both of his hands, and wrapped them around his knees. "Now look to the left." She said, and he did. "Hold that, right there." She commanded. He did, and she snapped a few pictures. Then she walked over to him again. "Now come over here," she said as she walked towards the edge of the sand dune. He followed her. "Stand right here," she began. She buttoned all but one button on his shirt, and took his hands again. This time she clasped them together and told him to keep the straight down that way, but to relax. 'Boy she sure is bossy with a camera in her hand.' Micky laughed to himself. "That's perfect! Right there." She exclaimed. He kept the half smile on his face while she shot close ups. "Ok, you're all done." She said sweetly.

"I can't wait to see how those pictures come out." Micky joked.

"Me neither." Angel said with a laugh. "Sorry if I was bossy, I get that way when I take pictures. I just want everything to be perfect." She smiled.

"Bossy? You? Pshaw." Micky said, and Angel laughed out loud. He got next to Angel and began to mimic the way she had acted. He messed up her hair.

"Hey!" She said with a laugh. Then he took her hands, and put them together. But he didn't let go; he held them in his hands. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with innocence. Micky leaned down, and kissed her softly on the lips. It only lasted a second, but he regretted it instantly. She immediately turned away from him.

"I'm so sorry..." Micky began. He couldn't believe he had made such a big mistake, now Angel would never trust him.

"Just, ... just forget about it." She snapped. Then she picked up her camera off the sand where she had placed it for a moment and turned to him. "I'm going for a walk." She said sharply. He just watched as she walked away, going further and further down the beach. He sighed to himself, and walked back to the pad. It would be a long couple of days with her avoiding him.
