The X-Men

Any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for.
-Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men

Feared and hated because they have been born with superhuman powers that set them apart from the rest of humanity. One man with a very special dream-- the peaceful coexistence of humans and mutants-- brought them together. Professor Chartles Xavier founded the X-Men to train mutants in the use of their powers. Sometimes, that means fighting evil mutants who want to dominate normal humans, other times it involves stopping prejudiced humand who want to see mutankind destroyed. In either case, it means fighting for the realization of the dream. That's the basic premise behind the X-Men.

If you've never read the comics or even checked out the cartoon before, you should. In addition to some great dramatic science fiction writing and outstanding artwork, X-Men sends out a great message: that it's okay to be different. Instead of mutant, substitute any race, religion, or ethnicity, and any person on the planet can relate to the prejudice these character fight every day. That, and plenty of angst to go around.

Some of My Favorite Characters

Cyclops and Phoenix

Phoenix Two of the original members of the X-Men, Jean and Scott Summers are the premiere mutant couple. To say they have been through a great deal is an understatement. A telekinetic and telepath of the highest order, Phoenix's powers first manifested at an early age when her best friend was hit by a car; experiencing the dying girl's thoughts as they went out one by one, Jean's mind closed itself off. Under the tutelage of Professor Xavier, she learned to control her powers. Since joining the X-Men, she has "died," to save her friends, only to be replaced by a cosmic entity who impersonated her. She was "resurrected" only to find that her true love had married someone who turned out to be her clone.

Cyclops Cyclops can fire concussive beams of force from his eyes; however, he is unable to control his optic blasts and must wear either a visor or glasses made out of ruby quartz to contain them. Orphaned at a young age, he finally found a home with the X-Men. After finally coming out of his shell and gaining enough confidence to become field leader of the team and to admit his feelings for Jean, she "died." He eventually married a woman who looked exactly like her, and they had a son. It was later discovered that his wife was Jean's clone, and she died in a battle after trying to kill her son and the X-Men. Any chance Scott and Jean had at happiness was short-lived, because Apocalypse infected Scott's son with a techno-virus that nearly killed him. In order to save his life, Scott sent him into the future, told he would never see him again.

Somehow, they managed to survive it all, Scott and Jean finally tied the knot, thirty years (our time) after they met. If you think their courtship was bad, for their honeymoon, they spent a dozen years 3000 years in the future raising Scott's son and battling Apocalypse. Through it all, though, they have managed to stay together and stay true to Xavier's dream.

Rogue and Gambit

Rogue This sassy southern spitfire has the mutant power to absorb the psyche, memories, and powers of another with the slightest touch. Her powers have left her isolated, unable to touch another human being without danger of hurting them. Her powers first manifested when she kissed her childhood sweetheart, leaving him in a coma for years. Originally a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, under the leadership of her foster mother Mystique, she permanently absorved the memories and powers of Carol Danvers, the original Ms. Marvel. While benefiting her with the powers of flight and invulnerability, this left her own psyche and that of Danvers vying for control of her mind. She went to Professor Xavier for help. Originally not welcomed into the group, Rogue proved her loyalty to the team and her devotion to the dream, since becoming a valuable member of the team.

GambitRemy LeBeau grey up in New Orleans, an adopted member of the Theives Guild. A master thief, while on a job, he met Storm, and helped save her from the clutches of the Shadow King. He later joined the X-Men. While a loyal member to the team, he has kept many secrets, including his wife, Bella Donna, and some sort of involvement with Mr. Sinister. An incorrigible flirt, he has been actively persuing Rogue almost since the moment he joined the team.

Rogue and Gambit have an incredible chemistry, but Rogue has been actively resisting his advances. That is, until the day they thought the world was going to end, and they finally gave in to desire and shared a passionate kiss. Gambit was left in a coma for a couple of weeks, and Rogue left the team, deeply disturbed by some dark secret she realized he was hiding after she absorbed his memories. Whether or not this couple is destined to be reunited remains to be seen.

Orphaned as a young child, Ororo Munroe grew up on the streets of Cairo, Egypt, becoming a maser thief. After her mutant powers to control the weather manifested, she was worshipped in Kenya as a goddess. It was there that Professor Xavier journeyed to ask her to join the X-Men. She accepted, and became an invaluable member of the team, eventually taking over the position of field leader from Cyclops.

Jubilee

Jubilee Orphaned at a yound age when her parents were murdered, Jubilation Lee took to living in a Beverly Hills shopping center. That is, until the day four of the X-Women went on a shopping trip, and she followed them home. She remained in hidind at their secret base until the day the Revears attacked and severely injured Wolverine. She helped to save his life and nursed him back to health. Ever since, the two were nearly inseparable, and Logan served as a surrogate father to the spunky mall rat.

Jubilee's mutant power is to emit colorful energy plasmids from her fingertips-- "fireworks," as she likes to call them. She joined the X-Men for a while, fighting by their side. During her tenure there, she was faced with many situations which forced her to grow up rather quickly; among these were the death of young Illyana Rasputin to the Legacy Virus and Wolverine's leaving the team following the removal of his adamantium by Magneto.

Jubilee

When the time came to start a school for the training of the next generation of mutants in the use of their powers, Jubilee decided to step down from the X-Men and to join Generation X, where she could interact with mutants her own age and better develop her powers, so that she might one day rejoin the X-Men.
