Enslow Monroe Gose was born April 1, 1848 in Brookfield, Linn County, Missouri. His parents were Christopher II. Gose and Mary (Polly) H. Bowling. Christopher died when Enslow was 5 years old and Mary died when he was 7. Enslow and four brothers were taken in to the nearby home of Uncle William Gose, a wagon maker in Linn and later in Sullivan County, Missouri and wife Martha Knifong. His Aunt Martha, mistreated him so when he was 16 about 1864 he ran away hitching a ride with a wagon train going west. Uncle William and Aunt Martha went on to Walla Walla, Washington.

Enslow worked as a herdsman on the Santa Fe trail during it's last days before the railroad. He returned to Missouri by the 1890's, moved to Oklahoma and then on to New Mexico, first to Clayton County, near Sedan, N.M. and finally to Roy, Union County, New Mexico where he died September 19, 1918.
