HAZELTON MOUNTAIN PHOTOS
The first picture show a view of the Hazelton to the left and Kendall Mountain to
the right from a point north of Silverton. In the picture the power line cut is visible on
Hazelton Mountain. In the open area of the first snow area is the radio site. The power line
cut makes a line to the site then goes off to the left to the new ridge line television site.
Also in this picture if you see the very peak of Kendall mountain the notch to the left is
where the Kendall radio site is now located.
Here the work crew loads up for the hike to the radio sight. Ben is in the K-9 shirt.
I had to get in some of these picture some how. So I did I'm pulling stuff out of the back of
my truck, ( I have the blue ball cap on.) Harley is the pack mule with the duplexers on his
back. Norm is behind him and norm's wife Pat, (N5CHI) is behind him. Jim Green, ( KJ5TA) in
the yellow "TOTAH" ball cap was the president of the Totah club at that time. At present Norm
is the president of the club.
This the actual site neat huh? The angle on which the folks work on was interesting.
The old tower section that is visible was left behind and donated by the tv people. The old
TV antenna was removed an will be used on other projects. The tower had to be stabilized first
the guy wires were so loose they were uneffective. Jim is on the tower taking down the antenna
while Harley holds the tower for him, (yeah I'm sure).
The tower was remounted as best it could and the guy wires were tightened. Rocks were piled
up to brace the tower and to build a shed to prevent the site from being taken down the mountain
by a snow slide.
This is the best picture I could find of the start of the shed building. The radio cabinet
will be installed on this side of the piles of rocks. The snow will move over the top of the
rocks and not take the site away.
This is the heart of the job in action. I managed to acquire a damaged car top luggage carrier
that was remodeled for our use. (I spend a lot of time on sealing the cabinet and making some
shelves inside for the equipment and mounting the radio stuff but it worked anyway). Ben and
Harley are seen here hooking up the repeater and feeding the coaxial cables out of the cabinet.
This is a westward view and downward to Silverton below. This site was made
operational on July of 1995, and it is still running hard.
