Chapter One: Into the Lime Light

“How should I dress?” I asked Zac excitedly into the receiver. I’d never been to such a “star-studded” event before.

“It doesn’t matter what you wear, I know you’ll look great!” Zac reassured me. He always knew how to suppress my whining. I was still worried though. I didn’t want to disappoint him. I know there is more to life than the way one looks, but recently it’s been difficult for me to live by that. Looking in the mirror, I questioned who my reflection was. Since when did I look like this? My tomboy figure was filling out and I wasn’t ready to deal with it. My hips were curvy, my chest was definitely curvy, everything is curvy! I wondered if Zac would even recognize me! They’ve been recording their album so I’ve only gotten to see Zac once since our commitment and tomorrow is our five month anniversary! I wish I could see him more often, but I know it’s hard for him to make the arrangements. I was just happy that things finally worked out. I was going to escort Zac to a party for Teen People at the Apollo in Manhattan, Harlem to be exact.

“Thanks,” I finally replied.

“If I don’t get to talk to you tomorrow, happy anniversary. Five months!” Zac mentioned dandily.

“You remembered!” I felt the “warm and fuzzy” feeling inside like when a kitten falls asleep in your lap. I knew he would remember but hearing him say that, and just the realization that it was for real made me giddy.

“Of course I remember, I got you something special too.”

“I just can’t wait to see you Zac!”

“Two days,” he chimed in.

“Two days,” I repeated. That was eternity after what seemed like so long already, my body filled with anticipation as butterflies flew every which way in my stomach.

The next morning I woke up early so me and my mom could get an early start on the mall scene. We took my new friend Suzy as well so that I could get a second opinion. Suzy was definitely my most fashionable friend and I knew she would be honest, probably brutally honest.

“Where shall we start?” My mom inquired while driving around for a spot.

“Macy’s?” I questioned Suzy.

“Caché,” Suzy said decisively, “I know you’ll find something there.”

“Okay, Caché it is,” I decided.

There wasn’t a huge selection there, but every last garment was gorgeous and of course extremely pricey. I wanted to go black, but my mom insisted it was too severe for a not-quite-fifteen-year-old. I reluctantly agreed and went to the dressing room to try on an array of full dresses, skirts, and even jean outfits. I ended up with a very pale pastel yellow two piece. My mom wasn’t crazy about this one either because it was too sexy for her, but Suzy and I adored it. The top was tight and fitting in cups over my chest. I had cleavage! I was starting to slightly enjoy these new developments. I felt like a Victoria’s Secret model! The bottom was a three-quarter length skirt that was nicely fitting and ended right below my knee with about a ten inch slit up the right side. I found perfect shoes as well. They were strappy silver 2 inch heels and laced up my ankles and part of my calf.

“You look killer!” Suzy jumped in satisfaction, “Wait!” Suzy disappeared for a second.

“How much does all this cost Sam?” My mom asked in a doubtful tone.

“Well...” I bit my lip, “How much is the most you’ll spend?”

“$100... $150 tops,” My mom concluded.

“Okay, then I only have to pay for $30!”

“That’s insane, $180? For that? You’re hardly wearing anything at all!”

Suzy popped back to the dressing room with a little barrette which she smoothed into the side of my hair.

“There,” She said, “Now you look complete.”

I smiled innocently and looked over to my mom who had her arms crossed against her chest.

“Okay, take it off, let’s get it and get out of here!” She replied.

With that I hugged Suzy in excitement and hurried to get back to the dressing room to change.

I could hardly sleep that night! Tomorrow I would be seeing Zac! It seemed unreal. I see my boyfriend, my best friend only once every few months? My boyfriend is famous! That’s what really seemed unreal. To me he’d always been Zac Hanson, my best friend. The boy who plays in a little band with his older brothers, who writes me a song from time to time, who has food fights with ice cream, who is a goof at heart, whose still only fourteen years old! But that little band from Tulsa wasn’t so little anymore. They were multi-millionaires, teen idols, Hanson. I closed my eyes to envision how their lives used to be, but before I got far, I drifted to sleep.
