The Racing Page!
Although we know little about horse racing, we have tried to put
together enough info that you can learn some more about racing. If you
have any suggestion, comments or questions, please feel free to e-mail
us with the deatils. Thanks!
Racing Facts!
#1: The Quarter Horse, Arabian and the Thoroughbred are the most commonly raced breeds
#2: The Thoroughbred can run fastest for a long time, but no horse on earth can beat a Quarter Horse for up to a quarter mile (except the appenix QH!)
#3: The quarter horse got it's name from racing (and being world's fastest horse at a quarter of a mile)
#4: The 3 most famous races are the Kentucky Derby, The Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes. They make up the triple crown
#5: The first jockey to race in short stirrups and lean over the horse's neck was Tod Sloan
#6: The most famous race horse ever was Man'O War who won 20 out of 21 races he ran. He won the Preakness and the Belmont, but wasn't entered in the Kentucky Derby.(this of course is our opinion, other may say that Cigar,
Secretaroat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, Ferdinand, Winning Colors,
Genuine Risk, Bold Ruler, Northern Dancer are just as famous!)
#7: The last horse to win the triple crown was Affirmed
#8: Other famous races are the Santa Anita HandiCap, The American Derby, The Breeder's Cup, The Arlington Classic, Jockey Club Gold, Pacific Classic, Dubai World Cup,
Florida Derby, Breeders Cup Sprint, Breeders Cup Juvinelle, Breeders Cup
Distaff, Breeders Cup Classic and the Widener Handicap
#9: It is a tradition at the Preakness to paint the winning jockey's silks (the colours on his shirt) and the colour of the horse on the wooden weather vane that sits atop the main building
#10: Charismatic won the 1999 Kentucky Derby and the 1999 Preakness and Lemon Drop Kid won the 1999 Belmont (sadly Charismatic broke his leg and only finished 3rd)
