Edith May REHN

Edith was brought up on a farm in Cowell South Australia with seven brothers and sisters.

Her marriage to a storekeeper in Gawler changed her life. Leaving Gawler they moved to Mount Gambier for approximately three years where they also ran a store. From there they decided to go to Western Australia where they bought a store in Katan ning.

The store was not a success and they lost money. Next move was to Dowerin where they accepted a position managing a store.

Edith ran a boarding house for a few years, this was in 1913 a drought year and things were hard. Later things improved. She always worked for their church Dowerin being such a small town they patronised both Church of England and Methodist.

She did not play sport but worked for the Sporting bodies, she spent a lot of time organising concerts as her two girls, husband and herself were musical.

She was a good community worker and helped whenever she could.

Gardening was another love and despite the shortage of water always had a nice garden. The local carter would bring a hundred gallons of water for one shiling (or as it is now, ten cents) three or four times a week. This was dam water and it wou ld be clared with epsom salts if the water was needed for household use.

She lived in Dowerin until her death in 1926.
