Biography

FACT: On April 4, 1994, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana commited suicide. FACT: His drummer, Dave Grohl, and second guitarist, Pat Smear, were left with absolutly nothing to do. What's the next logicla step for 2 talented musicians? Start a band, logically! They found a Bass player, Nate Mendel, and a drummer, William Goldsmith, both from Sunny Day Real Estate. They formed a group now known as the FOO FIGHTERS. Their first album was actually a demo that Dave had mixed when he was with Nirvana. The band took these songs and modified them a tad, them remixed them and sent it on it's way.

The album was a major hit. Within 1 month of it's release those 4 faces were plastered all over the rock loving world. Several of their songs were put onto mixed artist albums and greatest hit albums, including "Alone+easy target" which made it onto Big Shiny Tunes. The band toured for a period of time, and then went to work on thier second album. It was then that Will announced that he would be leaving the band. This naturally came as a shock, and the band was left drummerless for almost the entire album production. Well, to find another drummer good enough in that short period of time would have been hard, so Dave filled the drummer's shoes during recording. The Colour and the Shape was underway.

The album was released in mid 1997. By late 1997, it was running wild. People jammed stores to try and get a copy for a while. This album featured such amazing songs like "Monkey Wrench" and "Everlong." Then, tragedy struck again: Pat Smear announced that he was leaving the band. Apparently, he was upset that he was being drowned out during concerts by Dave. By now, they had accurired a new drummer: Taylor Hawkins, from Alanis Morrisette's band. Now they were faced with the problem of obtaining a new guitarist. Dave turned to his old friend Franz Stahl, who he had played with when he was with Scream. Franz fills Pat's boots nicely, so the band is now complete again. A little educational note: FOO FIGHTERS was actually a tern invented in World War 2 by the allies. They suspected that the Germans had a new advanced jet fighter, and that is what they called it. Today we call them UFO's.
