Additional Secrets for
Success
- Playing the piano involves the development and co-ordination
of several skills. These include technique, good tone production,
rhythm, theory, reading, playing by ear, other ear training,
pedalling, phrasing, and many others. It might be too much to
expect all students to be always working on all of these things,
but certainly they should each be addressed at some point.
- For every piece of music, at every lesson, write down in the
lesson book the AIMS and METHODS for the week for that piece.
- Have a regular theory assignment, each week or fortnight. I
often use Dulcie Holland's series Master Your Theory, and John
Thompson's three books, the Notespeller, Scalespeller and
Chordspeller, with my own alterations.
- Students need to succeed. This can be almost guaranteed if
they are given more opportunities for success. For example, a
student may be going slowly in reading, but succeeding very well
in technique, or theory. Concentrating too much on reading in that
case may cause the student to loose interest.
- Sitting correctly is vital. Often the piano benches at home
are the wrong height. A kitchen chair may have to be used instead,
and be cut down or have a cushion place on it.
- Pedalling is something that needs to be studied in its own
right.
