About the Coaches

Phil's PhotoHead Coach Phil Luebke

This is Luebke's fourth year coaching City High and West High (his alma mater) and marks a turning point in his coaching career. This year's two seniors were freshman when he started coaching in 1995, which means that there are no longer any swimmers on the team who also swam under his predecessor. "That's important," says Luebke, "It finally feels like I have total responsibility for the success and failure of my swimmers. I'm not trying to break bad habits learned under past coaches, and I'm not fighting the ghosts of the past when it comes to the rules I set and my coaching methods."

In addition to coaching, Luebke is also Marketing Director at Millstream Brewing Company  in Amana, Iowa, where the team holds their annual Maifest bratwürst stand fundraiser. He lives in Coralville and enjoys spending what little free time he has with his fiancée, Karen, and her two children. Phil's interest are wide, varied, and constantly changing, but include swimming, biking, running, reading, learning, Iowa City history, breweriana, computers, brainstorming, and corresponding with friends. Luebke's current side projects include saving and moving an old farmhouse and planning his wedding.

Chris' Photo Assistant Coach Chris Busch

This is Busch's second and final year coaching City and West. In his younger days (not so long ago), he enjoyed great success as both a YMCA and high school swimmer in Bettendorf, Iowa. He qualified for state all four years and competed in numerous national meets. One of the highlights of his career was swimming against Matt Biondi in a national meet in Texas. In high school, his team took second at the 1983 - 1985 State Meets. At State in 1986, he tied for 2nd in the 50 yd. freestyle in :21.92 and placed 3rd in the 100 yd. freestyle with a time of :48.19. His team took the championship that year. His memory is a little fuzzy on other times and places. Busch went on to the University of Iowa, where he played water polo, but did not swim on the team.

Coach Busch is affectionately known by the Iowa City swimmers as "Busch!" Last year he bought a house in town and he and his wife, Denise, spend a lot of time fixing it up. They also enjoy going on walks around Iowa City. The two hope to start a family soon, which is why this will be Busch's last year coaching. In his "spare" time, Chris lays bricks here in town.
