Chapter 1

Two Weeks Later,

Finally, Nick was in New York. Not only was he excited to be attending school, he was aslo happy to have his best friend Brian along with him. Nick and Brian were inseperable. Even though their is a five year age difference between them. But like the saying goes "Age is just a number." Lonnie had made arrangements for Nick and Brian to stay in a beautiful pent house, located convienianantly close to the school. Lonnie was going to be staying with his family, they lived around that area also.

"Nick! You better hurry up! You are going to be late for school." Brian said.

"God, Brian! You sound like my mother. Well, actually, mom never said that to me! Probably cuz I never really went to school." Nick said while lacing up his new Nike's.

"Well, Lonnie is going to pick you up in five minutes. He says he will let you alone, but if you need him, page him." Brian said.

They both knew Nick was taking a risk of being recognized. I mean, he was only 1/5 of the most popular group circulating now. The Backstreet Boys. Nick heard the horn of Lonnie's Jeep. He quickly grabbed his sunglasses, and his hat.

"Later, Brian!" Nick yelled.

"Have a nice day!" Brian said while laughing. **********************************************************************

Monica Pillar walked through the long hallway of Pleasent Valley High. She was one of the most popular, most admired girls of the school. She honestly didn't know why. Most people probably liked her for her looks, but she was smart, talented, and not modest at all. She stood at 5'10. She had thick, medium length brown hair. She had probably the biggest brown eyes you would ever see. The one thing Monica hated was how people look at her like she is behind a glass at a museum. She was just a regular girl, nothing seperated her from anyone else. Well, maybe what happened to her a few years ago. But she doesn't really like to talk about it.

"Why is everyone lining up outside the registration room?" Monica asked Nicole.

"Oh my gawd! You didn't hear?" Monica shook her had no. "Their is a well known celebrity attending our school this year!" Nicole said.

Nicole was a gossip. Every school has one. Well, this was Pleasent valley's. Nicole wasn't very pleasent, she was an air head. All though, she was very pretty. But, that was all she had going for her.

"No! I must of missed that big piece of news." Monica said.

She quickly glanced at her watch. She realized she was going to be late for her music class if she stayed and waited for the 'Celebrity' to arrive. She started to walk away.

"Don't you want to know who it is?" Nicole asked.

"Not really! If he is a well known celebrity, why do you think he is here?" Monica asked a very confused Nicole.

"To meet me! Then fall madly in love with me!" Nicole said.

"Yeah, maybe! But he is probably hear to get away from the lime light! Maybe this 'celebrity' just wants to be normal." Monica said.

"Oh well! I hope he is cute! Ewww! I hope it isn't a girl!" Nicole said.

Monica walked away. She began to laugh. She adjusted her cardigan sweater and headed to the music wing. When she walked in, she saw a guy whom she didn't recognize, talking to the music director. She took her seat and watched the new kid. He was tall, probably 6'1. She couldn't see his hair color because it was covered with a white hat. He was wearing tan pants, and a green sports Jersey. When Mr. Richards was done speaking with him, he took the available seat next to Monica. The class was made up of mostly guys. All underclass men. Monica didn't mind being with younger guys, all she cared about was singing. She noticed the new kid checking out his schedule. Monica decided to introduce herself.

"Hi, I'm Monica Pillar." Monica said.

She turned her chair so she was facing him. Nixk nervously glanced quickly at her. She thought this was strange. He gave her a small smile, but never really looking at her. Nick still hadn't said a word. She decided to try again.

"Your new, right?" Monica asked.

He didn't respond at all this time. Monica began to be insulted. She was always polite, she always was sociable, even to the new kids. But this guy wouldn't even talk to her.

"Ok. I'm sorry to have bothered you." Monica said. Her voice sounded a little hurt.

The class had begun. Mr. Richards began to select someone to get up in front of the class to sing their solo's. Monica sat in her seat, she wondered why this kid wouldn't talk to her.

"Monica? How bout you? Would you care to entertain us?" Mr. Richards said.

Monica nodded. She made her way up to the front of the class. Mr. Richards took his place at the piano. Nick had all of his attention on Monica. He watched and listened as she began to sing.

When you look in my eyes And I get emotional, inside I know it's crazy but you still can touch my heart And after all this time You think that I Wouldn't feel the same But time melts into nothing And nothings changed

Nick was completely blown away. This girl, Monica, had a voice of an angel. He continued to listen.

I still believe Someday you and me Will find ourselves In love again

I had a dream Someday you and me Will find Ourselves In love again.

As Mr. Richards finished the ending to the song Monica took a deep breath. She heard clapping coming from where her seat was. It was the kid that wouldn't talk to her. After Nick had began clapping, the rest of the kids did to. She smiled and then thanked everyone.

"How about you, Nick?" Mr. Richards said.

Nick looked around skeptically. He hadn't prepaired anything to sing, it was only his first day. Monica's eyes followed Nick as he walked up towards the front of the room.

"Um...what would you like me to sing, sir?" Nick asked.

"How about one of your songs?" Mr. Richard said.

Monica was listening to their conversation. What did he mean? One of his songs? Monica was confused, but carefully listened as Nick began to sing. His hat still shadowing his face from her.

I don't know What he does to make you cry But I'll be their to make you smile I don't have, a fancy car To get to you I'd walk a thousand miles.

Where had Monica heard that song before? She had heard it that morning on the radio as she got ready for school. This Nick kid was doing an excellent job at matching the sound she heard from the radio.

I don't care If he buys you nice things Does his gifts come from the heart I don't know But if you were my girl I'd make it so we'd never be apart.

But my love is all I have to give With out you I don't think I can live I wish I could give the world to you But love is all I have to give.

The entire class burst out in an uproar of applauding. Even Monica joined in. She really enjoyed his singing. He looked so secretive, almost like he felt he didn't belong. Nick smiled, thanked his audience and then sat back down.

"Well, Mr. Carter! Excellent job! But I wouldn't expect anything less!" Mr. Richards said.

Just then the bell had rang. Monica went to get her book from the desk, and as she did this her purse fell to the floor. All of her belongings spilling out.

"Oh gosh! I'm such a clutz." Monica said.

As she bent down, so did Nick. They literally bumped heads with each other. This knocked Nick's hat off.

"Ouch!" Monica said. She didn't want to sound rude, but her head was hurting.

"Oh, I am so sorry! Monica, are you allright?" Nick had said.

"Yeah, I'm fi-" She started to say. Just then she had recognized him. She wasn't sure who he was, but she had seen him on MTV.

"Are you sure? You might have a bump." Nick said. He gently brought his hand up to her head to check it out. She winced a little.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. Nick?" She said his name as if it were a question.

Nick quickly grabbed his hat and put it on backwards. Monica noticed he looked uncomfortable.

"It's ok! Don't worry! I won't tell anyone I have music class with Nick, the 'celebrity'." Monica said while smiling.

Nick smiled as he watched her smile. She seemed to recognize him, but not completely. Nick picked up her things, and helped her up. He extended his hand to her.

"I'm Nick Carter. Sorry I was quiet before. I just was trying to keep a low profile, ya know on the first day?" Nick said warmly.

"Low profile?" Monica said while touching her bump.

"Yeah! I don't want the kids giving me any special treatment or anything." Nick said. He removed Monica's hand from her head. He gently touched the red bump that was beginning to form.

She winced again. "Oh, well don't worry! Your secret is safe with me. But, I don't know who you are?" She said, she was embarassed. "But that song! It was beautiful. I heard it this morning for the first time on the radio, you sounded just like the group that sang it." She said.

"Do you know that group?" He asked curiously.

"No! I didn't catch their name. But then again, The last two years of my life have been kind of hectic. I haven't gotten out much." She said. Her voice turned sad.

"Oh! I'm sorry. Well, if you wanna talk about it?" Nick said.

She cut him off. "Nah! It's ok...I don't like to talk about it." Monica said.

"Well, um...about that group! I am in that group." Nick said sheepishly.

Monica's eyes grew wide. She smiled and took her purse from Nick's hands.

"Wow! Well, you have a beautiful voice. I have probably heard your songs, but like I said, my mind hasn't been in the entertainment world lately." She said.

"Well, I'm in a group called the Backstreet Boys." Nick began.

"Backstreet Boys? Hmm...oh wait! The song 'Quit Playing Games'?" She asked. She hoped she was right.

"Correct! See, you aren's sheltered." He said while smiling.

She looked at the time. She really had to get to her next class. She was glad she had bumped into Nick. He was very nice.

"Well, Nick! I have to go to class. I'll see you later." Monica said.

Nick smiled at her. He grabbed his books.

"Yeah! It was nice bumping into you." Nick said.

Monica laughed lightly, and then left the room. Nick sighed. He was really greatful that this girl didn't flip out on him. She treated him normal. He hoped everyone would be like that.
