Abigail Stump was born in Ohio in 1849. Her parents were Joseph C. and Malinda Julian Stump. Joseph and Malinda had twelve children: Lucinda b. 1845, Louisa 1847, Abigail 1849, Elias 1853, Mary J. 1854, Samuel 1855, Hannah 1859, Peter 1860, Ella 1863, Henry Theodore 1865, Elizabeth 1868, and Joseph A. 1870. Abigail married Thomas J. Fleming before 1874. In the 1880 census, they lived with three children, Nettie L., Oscar, and Charles who were five, four and two years old, respectively. They lived in Marion Township in Franklin County, Ohio. By the 1900 census, they had moved to Harrison Township in Van Wert County, Ohio and had eight children living at home. These were Nettie-25, Alvira-19, Hattee-17, Russel S.-15, George B.-13, Joseph-10, Clarence P.-5. They also had one grandson, Orville Edward-1. By 1920, Thomas had died, and Abigail, Nettie, Clarence, and another grandson, Harold, lived at Convoy in Van Wert County. Abigail's father, Joseph C. Stump, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio. He married Malinda Julian May 19, 1844. Joseph C. was elected to the Ohio legislature in 1877. He and his brother, Samuel, came to the Van Wert County area of Ohio from Pickaway County. Joseph's father was Peter Stump. Peter was born in 1787 in Pennsylvania and came to Pickaway County, Ohio as one of the early pioneers. He served in the War of 1812 and then returned to his farm in Pickaway County. About 1822 he moved to Hocking County. He had gotten married about 1815 to Mary Culp, daughter of Peter and Mary Culp. Together they had Lydia, Sarah, Esther, Abigail, Mary, Joseph C. and Samuel. Mary Culp was born in Pennsylvania in 1795 of German parentage. The Stump family came from Saltcreek Township, in Pickaway County. Berks County, Pennsylvania, families made up a considerable part of the people who settled in this part of Ohio after treaties were made with the Indians.
