Romanian Challenge Appeal - what is Our Lady of the Wayside helping to do?
Work at Siret and surrounding areas in Romania has been helped by Our Lady of the Wayside Roman Catholic Church in Shirley, Solihull for many years. Monthly coffee mornings where bric-a-brac, Traidcraft goods and so on are sold have raised many thousands of pounds for the project which has:
· Brought warmth, a reliable water supply and proper care to neglected children in a dilapidated orphanage
· Started the process of 'de-institutionalisation' of these children - many with physical handicaps or learning difficulties - by building and staffing a 'halfway house' (see our pictures!)
· Offered the possibility where appropriate of adoption of some children by Western families
· Provided opportunities for the orphanage residents to look to a future of work and a more normal life
