GENE   KELLY!!!

Gene Kelly was born Eugene Curran Kelly on August 23, 1912 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By the time Gene was eight he was working with the Five Kellys and they were performing dance routines at amateur vaudeville nights. Gene preferred sports to dancing though. He was good at gymnastics, ice hockey, swimming, football, and baseball. He hoped that one day he would play ball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In high school Gene started to like dancing because it made him popular with the girls. In 1932, the Gene Kelly Studio of Dance was founded with one studio in Pittsburgh and one in Johnstown. Gene then started doing Broadway plays and he became a success. He then signed a contract with MGM and the rest is history. His debut was in For Me and My Gal with Judy Garland and the film was successful and he credits that to Judy. Between that time and 1952 Gene made many successful movies but in 1952 he had a major hit with Singin' in the Rain and it has become one of America's most popular musicals. He made a few more movies for MGM and then began directing and other projects. In 1982 he recieved the Kennedy Center Honors and in 1985, a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute. He died on February 2, 1996 and he is no longer with us, but he will remain in our hearts forever.
