Colorful Birds

Some photos scanner in from "A Step by Step Book about Lovebird" by Arnold Weston
Last update 8/30/2011    This page does look different between Netscape and IE. I've done everything I can think of so they will be the same but nothing works.

Cockatiels

All Tiels are old enough to retire. No longer breeding Tiels.

Hon & Lessa I bred single, double and triple mutation Tiels. This pair produced Lutinos, pearls and Lutino pearls. Hon was our pet for 5 years before he was set up for breeding. This past June he turned 23 years old.
Newly hatched Cockatiels                   These will be Cinnamons and Cinnamon Pied babies

In the first picture you can see the egg tooth. This baby is still wet from hatching. It's only a few hours old. Just before this picture was taken it was standing in my hand with beak open crying for food. The dark spots in the crops of the other two babies are pieces of greens. These picture were taken in the early evening the parents were fed collards for their afternoon feeding. Pictures taken by Joan Hughes of Chesapeake.

Quaker, Tiel & Lovebird all hatched on the same day                Same Lovebird, Quaker and
Tiel

Since I bred Tiels, Lovebirds and Quakers, years I had all three species hatch on the same day so was able to take a comparison picture. Notice the size difference of the three species. They are all the same age. They hatched on the same day. The first one is the quaker, then a tiel and then the lovebird.

Lovebirds

I'm cutting way back on my Lovebird pairs so I have some available for sale.

I only breeding now Normals, Jades, Lutinos, both Cinnamons, pieds, & violets in the green series birds. In the blue series only Blues & blue pieds.

I have 3 pair set up now.

Orangeface babies

               Newly hatched Lovebirds                Baby Lovebirds

The first picture is a good one to point the series color. The middle and right baby have gray (silver) colored down which means they are blue series birds. The left one is orange down which is the color for green series. The green one can grow up to be normal or jade and or pied. The blues will be either dutch or cobalt and or pied.

Look close at the eyes of the baby in the next box. They are plum colored which means these are female cinnamons. The cinnamon gene is an incomplete ino gene so that's what give you the plum colored eyes. The eyes will turn black in a few days so it's just when the baby first hatches that you'll be able to tell the mutation until it feathers out. I know that they are females because the dad is a dutch blue that's split to Australian Cinnamon and mom is a green pied. Cinnamon is a sex-linked gene. Other sex-linked genes are American cinnamon, Lutino and the new Opaline.

Dutch Blues            ,       Cobalt
Babies

The first picture is adult Dutch Blues. The second is some of my babies. The greener ones are Dutch Blue and the ones that are a bit bluer are cobalt Blue or Med. Blues. All it means is that the Cobalt have one dark factor in them, if you know anything about genetics. These are blue series birds born with a silver down color.

Baby Green and Jade Pieds              Baby Green & Jade Pieds with baby Cobalt

Pied is a dominant in genetics so all you have to have is one pied bird to produce pied babies. The pied gene causes yellow feathers on the bird. Even markings are what's expected for a good show bird. The Pied should not be bred with the Lutino. The only way it shows up is in a jagged line on the back of the forehead color, which is a major show fault.

            Green Mask               Green
Mask                       The Masked birds are a different species of Lovebird and should never be bred with any other species. There are 9 spieces of Lovebirds which should all be bred within their own species and never bred with another species.
  1. Peachfaced Lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis)
  2. Masked Lovebird (Agapornis personata)
  3. Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri)
  4. Black-Cheeked Lovebird (Agapornis nigrigenis)
  5. Madagascar Lovebird (Agapornis cana)
  6. Abyssinian Lovebird (Agapornis taranta)
  7. Nyasa Lovebird (Agapornis lilianae)
  8. Redfaced Lovebird (Agapornis Pullaria)
  9. Black-Collared Lovebird (Agapornis Swindernia)
